Former Bruins Mike Reilly: Bought Out

Wishing Mike well with his next club. Solid player.

The way the FO handled this was embarrassing, and unfortunately it seems to be a recent trend. It started with icing Krug, shipping out Hall for scraps and firing Cassidy after telling him his job was secure. Yes it's a business but imo the Bruins are developing a bad look

Agreed. Reilly deserved better from management.

A dumb contract to begin with no doubt. Guy got hot for half a season and DS threw too much money at him based on that.

Boston ended up not being a great fit for him, but I agree with you that he will get a shot with another team. He will only be 30 at the start of next season and is definitely better than plenty of d-men on non-playoff teams.

Every team buys out trades and makes bad signings. It’s part of the business. Not just a bruins thing

Yes it is what it is. I still feel like he got a bit of shaft. It's all relative- I'd take that kind of $3m a year shafting any day of the week, but it doesn't mean I don't have some sympathy for how his Bruins career played out in the proper context. He was never as bad a player as his treatment suggested.

Remember that sick toe drag in pre season?

I think he was very talented but super gaffe heavy. I absolutely loved his stretch passes and transition game.

Wonder how he would’ve done with a full season under Monty, probably pretty well.

edit: wasn’t a toe drag, was a shot fake deke and snipe

I remember him for seemingly taking at least one stupid penalty per game. High stick, hook something. Oh well, the Reilly era is over, kinda.

I don't even know that his contract was that bad. Sweeney spend every penny he could, and Riley paid the price.

He played well his first year and a half in Boston. Someone is going to get a good value.

Disagree, he is a bad d man. He overhandles the puck until he gives it away, and he is soft as butter. He might catch on because he is a slightly better than average skater and especially can move the puck but even that is flawed.

The contract was questionable the day it was signed. Throughout the course of his career he is what he is. Soft, transition only defenseman closer to the AHL than the NHL. The cost to acquire only a future 3rd round pick spoke volumes. Bruins system supported but fear of contact, pressure, and lack of mental discipline with penalties/turnovers is what Reilly was. What Sweeney was thinking with the contract rather than low dollar extension is another reason for the Bruins being in the cap situation. Reilly's contract in Providence certainly increased the bonus overage for this season, no?

I would be surprised if he is a positive addition to a playoff team. More likely he returns to the Ottawa/Montreal/Minnesota type non-playoff teams he played for prior who need someone to play the minutes and assist with higher draft picks.

He drove me nuts against the better teams. My problem with him is that against better competition his decision making was far too slow and ended up in costly turnovers/mistakes. Definitely too soft as well, as you point out. His offensive skill allowed him to look pretty good against the weaker teams. Just not good enough when the game gets tight and fast. I still think he is good enough to land a spot on a non-playoff team due to his ability in the offensive zone.

The only places I can see him catching on is on one of the bad California teams.
