Former Bruins Mike Reilly: Bought Out

You could see it last night. It is a huge reason why he was so solid from the get go. He knows the system the best out of the new guys.

That's great news. Because you never know when bringing in D-men late in the season if they can adjust to how their new team defends especially when the new team is very structured like the Bruins.

Something else to keep in mind. Reilly has already played the "Julien system" of defensive zone coverage that the Bruins still employ for the most part. So hopefully there is some familiarity there (although I can't say if Reilly was good or bad under Julien).

He played under Julien?

He did exactly what they need from him last night. Quick retrievals, quick breakouts, quick shots from the point. Very pleased with how he fit last night with Miller. I'm curious to see if they keep these pairings and go back to Gryz-Carlo or if they do Gryz-McAvoy and Reilly-Carlo.

The thing that impresses me every time I watch him is the skating. He has amazing technique. He uses mohawk turns so effectively, he can walk the blue line with ease. Very much in that McAvoy and Grzcelyk type mold. Great fit back there.

Sens fan here intruding.

Reilly has everything to be succesful and really got much much better as the year went on. He's a guy who always had it in him back to his Minny days but never established himself or never really had the chance to play and make mistakes. Something we often see with tweeners or young players, they get limited opprtunity and when they make mistakes they're out of the lineup.

This year, considering how bad the Sens D was, he got the chance to play in meaningful minutes and wasn't benched for every little mistake. He got the chance to stay in the lineup and work on his game and really refine his defensive side. By the end here in Ottawa, he was really aggressive and physical all over the ice, breaking plays and like you mention he has good skating and vision.

If he can be paired with a guy that he can lean on defensively I think he will flourish and could be an underrated move for Boston, even past this season.

Pretty much every Sens fan hated Reilly to start the year but as it went on it was undeniable that he got much better and got some praise from DJ Smith and the fans really warmed up to him. I know some fans wanted him to stay but with our left side pretty much locked in as of next season it didn't make sense to keep him.

Hoping for the best, by all accounts he was a really well liked guy in the room and by our coaching staff.

Great post, thanks for the insight!

From the main board trade thread... some stated that Reilly was shaky?

I havent seen it. Actually he is slick. Good at bringing the puck up the ice/dangle

Advance tap passing

At this rate, Bruins need to lock him up... but expansion draft makes things tricky.

Oh he'll gaffe. For sure.

Thing is, I think it'll matter less in Boston. We're structured and the Senators are... Almost systematically erratic.

Major Seidenberg vibes- not necessarily in terms of play style but in terms of him being a guy that’s bounced around a bit who all of a sudden looks like a bonafide top 4 once landing here in a structured system. Although Reilly is more physical than I anticipated so maybe they are closer in play style than I thought.

They got him as he’s entering his prime, hopefully they can figure something out after the expansion draft and bring him back

Love that he is smart with his passes (that outlet to Marchand in 2nd that lead to DK) just wow...and he gets the puck in deep.

I still would prefer to see McAvoy on top pp with Hall....so far on the PP, he doesn't shoot enough

Its fine the way it is

Reilly doing his best Kaberle "no shoot" impression on the pp. Good clean passes
