Mike Milbury has finally left the Islanders (some lineage included)

It's funny how somebody like Milbury was a solid (though unspectacular) NHL player, a reasonably successful coach (.628 for two seasons in Boston and a Finals' appearance), but then performed so badly as a GM. I don't think his draft-record is that bad -- check out Edmonton's from about 1983 to 1993, while they were a Dynasty, for a good laugh -- but his trades were just awful. Really didn't seem to understand how to build a team.

Having a brash, overaggressive attitude doesn't always translate well to management positions. You can have that personality as a player or coach, but it doesn't seem to have worked in Milbury's favor. Some of those trades are just flat out stupid. The only explanation is that his attitude and ego got in the way.

You're probably right. Players learn to take charge and make an impact immediately, without waiting. Coaches learn to push the emotional buttons of players on a game-by-game basis. But GMs have to remain cool and collected even in the midst of long losing stretches, and keep the franchise on the path to long-term success. Milbury seemed the type not willing to wait, and wanting to make his mark 'now'. Which failed.

Was that Milbury who wanted DiPietro and signed him to, like, $100 billion a year?

reading this has given me stomach pains. if i could figure out how to adhere a picture of Mad Mike to the bottom of my toilet, i would do it.

i didn't think anyone could be that bad. he destroyed the club, IMO. took Snow about 10 years to get it back to respectability.

reading the OP made me cry. tears of sadness, as a decade of my loyalty was truly tested.

i also shed tears of joy, knowing the his influence/reign (rain?) is over. good riddance.

he is entertaining as a tv personality, but if he EVER comes close to the NYI's again, i am going to become just a hockey fan, and pack my NYI treasures into my attic until the plague is again lifted.

Couldn't make out what Mac said.

i believe it went something like this...

MM stated that the person of topic had skipped being coach and GM, and went right to upper management. he said that he wished that he had done that. Bobby Mac said that the Isles would have wished that too.

when it comes to the 2003 draft or any draft--every fan base can do a "we could have had..." discussion. About ten years I grabbed one posters from every board and did a redraft from 1990 to 2005 for a fair and balance look at what the teams could have been

Well when 16 out of the top 20 picks played over 500 games and you happen to be in the 20% that year, you failed. Robert Nilsson was ranked the 9th best skater......EUROPEAN wise.

That attitude does not seem to serve Snow very well, either. Not everyone can be the smartest guy in the room.

He's one of the suckiest GM I've ever seen, with the likes of Rejean Houle, Greg McTavish and Jim Benning.

Benning's drafting record takes him out of this discussion.

We have a few picks that are looking like potential home runs.

He was a terrible GM and a terrible person but it amazes me how much credit/discredit GMs get for drafting around here. They have a staff of anywhere from 20-100+ scouts and a handful of those have a major say in what the GM will think. Even a GM like Tim Murray who probably does more hands on scouting than any other GM will base much of his input on what other people he trusts tells him. Obviously the GM will orchestrate draft day trades and will get a final decision on who gets selected but if a team is terrible at drafting then 10-20 guys are at fault and not just the GM. Some GMs out there do very little scouting and turn over nearly all the power to a few guys.

As far as I know, part of the job of a GM is to put together their various staffs. Even if a GM isn't hand picking his draft classes the success or failure of that aspect of building a team and organization is still laid at his feet.

Milbury first draft was 1996 not 1995 (Maloney was still the GM at that time).
Outside the top 5, Milbury only good pick were Chara in '96 (I player that they never saw live, only videos but decided to take a chance on him because he was big), Nielsen in '02, Comeau in '04. And that's about it! In 10 years! But if I'm more generous, I can maybe add Martinek in '99, Bergenheim in '02 and Campoli in '04.
Still very bad to have so few players in that many years.

I certainly am not going to make a case for him as he was truly terrible but the Depietro signing was not on his watch, Snow was a very green GM by the time and that signing was Charles Wang all the way.
unless I mis-understood your statement Dipietro was signed under MM not snow.....anyway, to be a tad fair on Milbury I do believe the ISlanders lead the league in owners as convicted felons while Milbury was trying to be GM.......but the truth is some of Milbury's actions made me scratch the one hair I had left on my head

2 Statements from GM Milbury

That still make me vomit in my mouth
When he traded for Yashin he reasoned that he needed to accelerate the development of the program
I'm not interested in setting things up for the next guy.

Regarding the DiPietro pick with the #1 overall selection he spoke glowimgly of the young goalies stickhandling
adding, If he can stop the puck he will really be something.
