Player Discussion Mike Matheson

Matheson's play of late is a big reason why the team has been winning games. He's made some great defensive plays without as many blunders.

I think having Hutson take a little bit of the offensive pressure off maybe allows him to play a more complete game - not that he'll ever be a defensive stalwart.

I've criticized him plenty but I feel like this has been his best stretch of hockey as a Hab and he deserves some praise.
He does deserve praise and he has been excellent.

He's always been good defensively with us, it's just the blunders would be all anyone would see/talk about. But yes for sure having a PMD with him has allowed him to play a safer game and he's cut the blunders down and so his good defensive play is getting seen more.

Matheson be like:

This guy cost us the game tonight.

I noticed his poor defensive play and untimely shot.

Somehow the 5’10” Tatar out muscled the 6’2” Matheson on the Devil’s 3rd goal.
Matheson did an unwise wrist shot when we had momentum in the 2nd period. Devil’s players had been on nice for over 1 minute.

The OT Laine’s poor pass but then again Matheson seems to want to be the hero and didn’t play his position. He’s supposed to be back.

Matheson is a risky defenseman for sure.

Matheson wants to be the hero. He’s pissed Hutson took his spot. He was on pace for 62 points but now maybe 40

I was surprised to learn that MM is on the reserve list for the 4 Nations tournament. So someone must want him somewhere

That was easily the worst game Methhead has played. He frustrates me like Brisbois, Boullion and Traverse did. The smart move is to get a good return for him. Hopefully Orvil Ruckenchucker can play the top RD position soon.

I know i keep saying it and I'm sorry but

If this is NOT dealt with this summer
And we don't trade Matheson for a RD

We will have set the rebuild back, maybe irreparably (not trying to be overdramatic, but the alternative is an extension AND raise(!!!) It will RUIN us for YEARS)

It MUST end this summer
Or else

Do the right thing HuGo, don't f*** this up

He's been really good the last few games.

Having him being reliable and playing with Hutson who's practically a 4th forward on the ice, is a nightmare for the opps.

Crazy idea but if our D core ends up stacked (Reinbacher, Engstrom, Mailloux are all top 4D quality... lets pretend lol), I'd like to see the Habs line up Hutson as a winger and let him run free as a bird. Maybe not as a full time winger but a strategy we can employ when the opportunity presents itself. I'm probably years too early with this but I won't be surprised we try it down the road.

Matheson is being considered for Team Canada to replace Pietrangelo's spot.

Imagine? I've said it for a while now, our herd is overlooking Matheson and dwelling on his flaws way too much. Our fan base never does this right? Like Danault is just some average 3C type and Gallagher is making him look good type stuff

No he’s not being considered. At least by no one serious.

His mistakes look bad. But the cost to benefit ratio needs to be considered. He helps more than he hurts.

That last f*** up was on MSL. Putting Matheson and Laine together in OT is reckless gambling.

These things are easy for us to say as fans. I think this is a usage issue. Because they are used high, mistakes will happen and they will stand out more due to volume.

The Habs have also won games in OT with the other teams good assets making mistakes as well. I just feel we are focusing on it more. You got to be able to trust Matheson with his skating in 3/3 OT. I think Matheson was out of gas. That was the issue I seen.

It's 3 on 3 hockey.

That's typically how teams score.

Our D is not stacked and won't be either.

A lot of people have this mindset that small players can't play D and can't let go despite the evidence.

Hutson is a D. He's great as a D. He drives plays as a D. He'll remain a D.

I think our D is very stable but we have some flaws to sort out with growing pains.

I like Hutson just as much as any other Habs fan but I'd be gullible to think he won't be targeted more and more and in the playoffs, his time/space will be taken away from him more. I'm sure he will overcome it here and there but be prepared for some setbacks.
