Why did Pitsburgh trade him? Aren’t they contending?

Maybe Petry tops him short term for the time of their window, the real Petry was a top pairing player and he went to the finals. He's the same age as their core, they'll go all out for a last cup toghether. They got Poehling too, a former 1st round pick who never got a chance on the Habs, Poehling has all of the tools to succeed in Pittsburgh.

They probably figure he’s topped out his development while Petry has hit higher highs. They are working with a hard compete window so every bit counts… but I wouldn’t have made that trade, if I was Hextall that is.

I think they see Petry as "clutch". I think it's a good deal for both teams, Matheson is already impressive.

I think this was their thinking. We forget because Petry sucked for 30ish games last season (for very valid reasons)... but he was a legitimate #2 for the majority of his time in Montreal. He also stepped up big in the POs and would play like a legitimate #1 when Weber would go down.

I bet Petry bounces back in a big way this season. Letang - Petry - Dumoulin and maybe a TDL acquisition is a great top 3-4 for a playoff run.

Best player on the ice for the first preseason game, guy has wheels, his skating is flawless, he reminds me of Petry rushing the puck, and a nice shot and not a liability so far.
I was thinking same thing, the way he tries to blow by defenders on rushes. If he wore 26 I would have sworn it was Petry.

I wonder what we could have gotten if we included Eddie at 50% retained AND took back the petterson contract. Maybe a 1st and Pickering. And since Pickering is from Manitoba, maybe use him as a trade chip to get PLD.

I thought Matheson looked great last night. It should silence any naysayers when they got him. The Great thing is, he's 28, so he'll be hear when they start competing.

Matheson is already a far far superior PP QB using his career trend, the. Petry ever was / will be.

I have no idea how you can claim this. in 2018, Petry had 6 PP goals and 17 PP assists. The 3 years after he scored anywhere from 11 to 14 PP points. He wasn't a great PP QB, but Matheson has yet to prove himself as a PP QB. A big reason is he played behind either Yandle or Letang his entire career, but any prediction about his PP QB abilities is simply a "we have to wait and see" type of situation.

He's starting to be the defensemen I though he was going to be when in his 1st years with Florida. Really good trade by Hughes

Mike Matheson’s return is faster than initially believed. He will first have to take part in a number of practices before they can narrow down an actual return date.

Going to be fun watching Hughes deal with the fallout.

I think we just need to buy some time, maybe Matheson doesn't come back too early, and as good as they are looking I would send both Slaf and Xhekaj to the AHL while KH make make something happen.

I think we should trade him at deadline. He's good defenseman and they usually fetch overpayment at deadline. Habs are stacked on left D. With maturity of Guhle, Harris and Jackeye. Gives extra 5 million in caproom next summer also
