I’m warming up to Matheson’s play. MSL is successful playing him in a way talk M doesn’t do as many blunders. He’s become a net positive.

Math still makes mistakes
but him being replaced by Lane is working too

If KH gets a solid offer he may move him
He still makes mistakes. The coaching staff knows this. He can also help the team. But if they put Matheson in a position to fail, they should shoulder part of that responsibility.

The Pittsburgh 2nd this year is from that trade, too, isn't it?

Matheson, 2nd in 2025 (Pitts - came the year after), 3rd in 2025, 4th in 2023, 4th in 2025 is the total return + Pearson and Lindstrom. That's the total tally over two years of Petry trades.

Pretty amazing trade(s) considering they acquired the superior player and contract.

Can't believe people were down on Hughes at the start of the year.

I can see it. Slafkovsky's development has been uneven, Reinbacher struggled in Europe and is missing this season, and Dach and Newhook are still huge question marks.

But he's got a clear vision, is willing to take actual risks (without seriously damaging the team long term) and I'd say he did a better job than any GM in the league in turning cap space into draft capital in the flat cap era.

I like him better than Petry. Hughes made out like a bandit on that trade considering that Petry wanted out, on top of his age and contract.

He's also been excellent with Hutson.
Matheson needs a role and I think playing on his weak side keeps him focused.
I said as much a heck of a long time ago before many were crediting his game.
Not being on PP1 helps his game tremendously his mistakes aren't snowballing like we've seen in the past. Use your mobility to retrieve pucks find Hutson in space rinse and repeat.
Actually he's also finding forwards who are more available than once upon a time.

Matheson haven't had a terrible game like he did earlier this season every ~5 games since a few games before acquiring Carrier. No more Mike "Hero of this story" Matheson (he was really trying to do too much).

*touch some wood*

I wonder if Habs management expected that acquisition to turn around the defense so much. It just pushed Matheson into the right chair and gave another RHD to eat hard defensive minutes and tada: another GA per game removed, stable D pairs and the other D pairs are now getting points too.
