I have so many fond memories of listening to him call games. I don't think there will ever be another like him.

He had such a feel for calling games too. People who don't know him might have heard the catch phrases and figured he was a huge homer and that couldn't be further from the truth. He called Pens goals with passion - of course. But he would never call a game unfairly and would always give the other team their due.

More than that could sense how a game was going and was never hesitant to let you know. I can't count the number of times he divined that *insert player here* had some extra pep in their step in warmups or on their first shift and that they were going to have a big game. And you know what? He was almost always right. The true greats at calling games like Lange and Bob Cole and Doc Emerick and so many others....they have that feel for the flow of the game. And that separates them from the other announcers.

Lange will be remembered for his goofy non-sequitur goal calls more than anything else - which I'm sure he wouldn't mind - but it bears repeating that in his prime, he was an outstanding play-by-play guy who made just about every game exciting. His presence on Pens broadcasts has been sorely missed since his retirement. There will never be another PBP announcer quite like him.

This. Condolences to the city of Pittsburgh and the hockey world as a whole.

Mike was the reason I fell in love with hockey when I was a kid. The best to ever do it. RIP Mr. Lange.

Certainly an era of legendary broadcasting is ending.

This one hurts. It's one that people knew was coming but also one that you would never be truly ready for.

Aside from the memorable goal calls and sound clips, Lange was just one of those guys who you never heard a bad thing about and always had time for everybody outside of the game.

RIP

Iconic.

Mike Lange was as responsible as anyone for the growth of the game in Pittsburgh. Yeah, the players are the reason you tuned into the games, but Lange was a reason to keep coming back even if the team wasn’t so good. Speaking for myself, I was enamored with Lange’s catch phrases as a kid and would repeat them all the time. He made watching the game fun on another level.

RIP to a true legend.

In that one of a kind gravelly(?) voice....Heeeeeeeee shoots and scores! or, Scratch my back with a hacksaw!

So many iconic phrases ...beat him like a rented mule! ...smiling like butcher’s dog! Michael Michael motorcycle! Call Arnold slick from turtle crick.
What was the one, something about the fast lane and grandma’s bingo game?

Legendary
