Keenan coached in the NHL at a consistent rate from 1984-2009 and he says he could have coached for another 10 years.

Listened to a podcast with Mike Keenan awhile back. This story might've been well-known to Blues fans but I'll share in case I wasn't the only one who hadn't heard it.

It's the summer of 1995 and Mike Keenan and the Blues have decided to move on from Curtis Joseph after another disappointing playoff exit. Keenan and assistant Bob Berry are sitting at a local St. Louis restaurant on the patio when they see a nice car pull up and roll down the window. It's Wayne and Janet Gretzky who had a house in town. Wayne asks them if they're going to be there awhile and Keenan tells him they'll wait for him to join. They drive off but return a short while later.

They're in the middle of discussing what the hell they're going to do for a goalie for the upcoming season. Names are thrown around when Janet chimes in and says she knows someone who would be perfect, Gretzky's long-time teammate Grant Fuhr.

Long story short, the Blues sign Fuhr shortly after and deal Joseph's rights to the Oilers. Keenan, unconvinced the Blues other goalies are worth a damn, agrees to let Fuhr golf whenever he wants instead of practicing in order to keep him fresh for what would end up being a 79 start season in 1995.

Same here. My personal Mt. Rushmore of Blues goalies is Liut (thanks Dad), Fuhr, Binnington, and the guy featured in my avatar, who makes it on a technicality.

Yes. He was my favorite keeper growing up as a goaltender. Despite being in the twilight of his career, seeing him join the Blues was a childhood dream come true.
