And the tank would be on

Lets see can we make everyone happy.
Ok. Here are the different factions on the board.
1. I didn't trade Kessel or Phaneuf. Don't panic.
2. I didn't trade Kadri or Gardiner. (Nobody can agree on a return anyway unless its an overpayment and that is never going to happen from another team.) I gave Gardiner a Kadri bridge deal for 2 years.
3. I didn't sign Bolland (or anyone else) to a crazy UFA contract. I don't see anyone available anyway that wouldn't be an overpayment. I let our UFAs walk except for: McClement,Smith and Bodie and Ranger.
4. I traded Franson and Reimer for draft picks.
5. I promoted the Marlies.
6. And finally for the tankers who hope to finish in the top 3 of a strong 2015 draft class to get that elite center we will never see:
My roster (I just don't have a backup goalie yet):

So are we a Bolland/some D away from being legit?

Nope.

Doesn't mean we can't add some good important pieces though.

I would let Bolland go and pursue a Stastny or a Niskanen in free agency.

**** no! This team needs to stop trying to sign big UFA's to get better. They fail far more often then they work out and it sets the team back by masking the issues. Only way I'd be open to a UFA signing is if they were under 3 year terms, which will never get you a big name. You build through the draft and trades, add a UFA to put your team over the top and make a run.

Not even close, the Culture must change (Leiweke). The scouting must get better, we have to draft better. (Nonis)

Is this a top 3 draft pick team?
I didn't trade away any youth or the sniper and defender.

depends if Carlyle returns. i think the lineup you posted with Carlyle could finish bottom-3. probably a different story with Trotz though, for example. for this reason i would be okay with keeping Carlyle if it didn't seem certain that it would result in trading at least one of Kadri or Gardiner.

this is the paradox of Leaf fandom in 2014. if we let Carlyle return and gave Nonis free reign to go out and acquire some more Carlyle players the team would likely finish bottom-3. but Carlyle is the worst and the Leafs front office is incompetent and they would inflict a lot of damage en route to that lottery finish. also the team would be tanking while actually trying to improve short term, and just failing at it so spectacularly that the result would resemble tanking, except without the extra picks and cap space etc. that seems important.

You gota assume that IF Randy ends up staying, it has to be because Nonis has backed him. If this occurs, and the team is bad next season, Nonis will have put himself in a position to lose his job. Can't see this happening, and nor can I see this team finishing as poor as they did this season, with or without RC.

Not with the JVR-BOZAK-KESSEL top line still in tact, and a healthy Bernier.

The team you posted earlier would be a fringe playoff team, most likely on the outside looking in I would guess.

This team finished 8th with them now. No Bolland, remove Raymond's goals and Kulemin's 2-way play and we shouldn't be going that much higher while the kids learn. If we finished better how could you not laugh.

Remove the last ten games, where we didn't have Bernier and I doubt we'd be selecting in the top ten, hell, removing our last ten games we could be gearing up for game six tonight :P.

It is really hard to predict, the Leafs are such a wildcard right now, I wouldn't be surprised to see us in the playoffs next year, or picking top eight again.

Stastny would be a great 1a/b centre for us, so I would consider pursuing him for around his cap hit right now. This allows us to trade one of our other centres.

Lots of options this summer from a trade, UFA and drafting perspective, very interested to see what moves we start making after the playoffs.

We didn't really use Bolland as we wanted to. Just coming off his injury made it foolish to put him in a shut down role immediately. We had Bozak and even Kadri playing that role rather regularly. As for Kulemin, his minutes ( outside of SH TOI, which was crap) was a lot lighter than the previous year.

In other words, I cannot see us tanking without Bolland and Kulemin. What made a bigger difference is Bernier and our top pairing. The latter worked for most of the season so moving Bernier and Phaneuf is how you'd start tanking. Move one or the other ( vs both) and I doubt we'd be picking top 4. More of an 7-8 with a team with those two performing like a bubble team, i.e. #9-10 to WC.

let bolland walk... he's always hurt. how can you depend on him?

is he talented? yet. good work ethic? yet. injury prone? yes. much prefer keep kadri OR move him for a C upgrade

Sorry for my ignorance but who is Mike Augello? Some Maple Leafs blogger? Anyone could have come up with arbitrary grades based on their thoughts.

That's the thing, you can't depend on him. Which makes the trade puzzling to begin with. 3 picks for an injury-prone UFA at the end of the season. Chicago moved him, they saw the writing on the wall

He use to be a daily caller on the Andy Frost show after leaf games, better known as Mike in Buffalo.

His opinion isn't any more valid than yours or mine.

Chicago moved him because he's not a core piece. But guess what? He's (probably) going to be core here. How many pieces do we have like that. Problem.
Chicago identified their core and they don't move. Ladd,Buff,Versteeg,Bolland,Stalberg, etc. all out and Chicago hasn't missed a beat.

Thanks for the information Hennig. That is hilarious

Maybe Mike should just comment on the Sabres rebuild instead. :sarcasm:
