Cade is very much that dude.

It's been a tough stretch for Detroit pro sports. Pistons have a nice little core building with Cunningham and Bey, hopefully a top ~5 pick can come in and build on that. Mize, Torkelson, and Greene are giving the Tigers some life. Obviously Seider, Raymond, and Larkin are giving us a glimpse of a brighter future for the Wings. None of those jobs are finished by any stretch, but it's nice to see us start to turn the corner.
At least to me (and obviously to themselves as well) the Tigers seem to have ended their rebuild. If their former top 50 prospects become solid regulars eventually, they have a very nice core already assembled for next year:
- a rotation of Turnbull, Rodriguez, Mize, Skubal and Manning,
- Alexander, Soto, Cisnero, Chafin, Funkhouser et alia out of the bullpen,
- a lineup with Baddoo, Greene, Candelario, Torkelson, Baez, Schoop/Paredes and Rogers/Haase and ideally room for adding a bat-first LF,
- and at least several solid prospects coming up like Wentz, Kreidler, Faedo and perhaps Dingler and Brieske.

No other Detroit team looks similarly good to me. If Illitch were willing to increase the payroll to $ 180m or more (still far away from the CBT or previous commitments), then...

I couldn't help but notice the omission of the Lions. Good choice!

It's not about that for me. I get it. I just really hope this is the last tanking season. (Heh- I say "last" as if they haven't only been doing it for two seasons...)
It should be the last one. Otherwise something is wrong. Cade is basically already a star. Bey is a nice piece. Whoever we draft should be at least a solid #3/4. If you can’t make the playoffs or at least the bubble with that something is wrong.

Wow! Tigers acquire Austin Meadows. This is the type of move I didn’t think Avila was capable of. Awesome trade. Meadows is one of my favorite players.

Meadows is a LF only and not even a good fielder at this position. I don't consider his offense to be much more than above-average for such a bat-first position. Why didn't the Tigers sign Conforto instead of throwing away significant assets?

Now the Tigers have filled the one position where they could have implemented an elite bat next year (even if Judge would not come). This move displays money-saving for mediocrity for me. I am really disappointed.

On surface level it doesn’t make any sense valuation wise. I’m very happy to be on the right side of it. Makes you feel like the outfield when healthy is Meadows, Baddoo and Greene, with Haase as the 4th man/platoon option and Hill as the pinch run/defensive specialist.

I’ve noticed how little the Tigers have held my attention in recent years, which is not entirely their fault, but surprising considering that baseball was my first and primary sport. This year has that feeling that the Pistons and Wings both had to start the year. You want to watch because it’ll be interesting and fun. Not the same old shit, but progress being made

I wouldn’t call Paredes and a pick outside the top 50 “significant” assets.

Also, Meadows being under contract isn’t going to prevent them from signing another star player.

Cabrera's in the last year of his deal next year. Meadows will probably move to DH next year to crush righties and split time with Cabrera. Grossman is also off the books next year.

I don't know how you could be upset over adding a 26-year-old who's under control until 2025. He was a 2+ WAR guy last year and a 4.4 WAR guy two years ago. This is a great addition.

I agree. Meadows should be DHing, but he obviously won't unless Miggy goes down (which, to be fair, is highly possible).

I was hoping all off-season the Tigers would sign Kris Bryant, one of the best utility players in the game. That's easy for me to say - I'm sure the Tigers front office would give 182 million reasons why they opted for Meadows instead.

But that's the issue, IMO. Detroit doesn't have a lot of long term money on the books; short term, subtracting Meadows ($4M) and adding Bryant ($26M) would've put Detroit's payroll at $138M, a hair over league average ($134M).

The Tigers soured on him, but I considered Paredes to be an interesting option at 2B, where Schoop has more power but is projected to have a subpar OBP. A pick around #80 usually brings in a top 25 prospect.

Meadows' dream-like 2019 performance is in the past; I don't expect it to happen again. He is not a bad player, but more a second-tier regular. These players are important as well, but I fear that the Tigers have too few better players in their current and future rosters. Even if Illitch were willing to increase the payroll, most positions are spoken for.

The Tigers picks around #50-100 OA over the last 10 years:

- 2021: Izaac Pachecho, Dylan Smith
- 2020: Daniel Cabrera, Trei Cruz
- 2019: Nick Quintana, Andre Lipcius
- 2018: Parker Meadows, Kody Clemens
- 2017: Rey Rivera, Joey Morgan
- 2016: NA
- 2015: Tyler Alexander, Drew Smith
- 2014: Spencer Turnbull, Grayson Greiner
- 2013: Kevin Ziomek, Jeff Thompson
- 2012: Jake Thompson

So, outside of Turnbull and Alexander (who aren't anything special), a whole lot of nothing.

Meadows plugs into DH with a career .875 OPS against RHPs (.918 against RH starters... in a division loaded with RH starters) when Cabrera's out of the lineup this/next year and when Cabrera's gone after next year.

They only have $82.5 million committed for 2023 and $43 million committed for 2024. Adding Meadows, who's not a UFA until 2025, won't hinder their ability to spend at all.

If Meadows stands in the way of Aaron Judge signing in Detroit... you just trade Meadows.

Good trade. Meadows certainly has his limitations, but he produces offense.

And while plate discipline is Paredes' carrying tool, he doesn't provide much else. Extremely limited defender, little power, no speed. Decent floor, but the ceiling is low.

The worst part of this is I fear Greene will remain in the minors, even after he's healthy and back up to speed. Which is not what I was hoping for when I kept him in my keeper league

While I am still not a fan of this trade, an OF of Meadows/Greene/Grossman with Baddoo et alia as backup sounds nice. At least in the minors, Greene was said to be better at CF than many thought.

Baseball is at the second lowest point of interest ever for me. Tired of MLB & MLBPA antics. Have a free MLB TV subscription thanks to T-Mobile so odds are I will catch a Tiger game or two and might go to Comerica during the summer but they are close to losing me as a fan forever.

I am looking forward to the NFL draft.
