Micheletti doing color on the isles game

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
Hopefully someone over there explains the concept of the royal road and then he can come back to us as a good professional broadcaster with a modern take on the game.

Me too. And would love him with the isles
I know enough about the game at this point that I'm not looking for profound insights from the color commentator. I just want a guy with a decent personality who also has a good rapport with the PBP guy. Joe checks those boxes. And, while he doesn't tell me things I didn't already know (generally), he does often catch things during the game that I didn't/couldn't see myself. As far as I'm concerned he does a good job and is a good fit with Sam, and at least as long as Sam sticks around, Joe should, too.

Exactly. I expect a bit more…exposition and insight from a radio guy. But for tv, I’m watching it. I get it. I just want a pleasant guy with good stories to watch the game with.

It's why I love Gary, Keith, and Ron so dearly in the Mets' booth. Now, with GKR, they are actually insightful and do regularly explain things that I didn't otherwise understand, but what's really great is their chemistry, and their general charm. Baseball can be f***ing boring, but I could just listen to those three BS and reminisce all night long. They're like three best friends who also happen to love the team and know a shitload about the sport.

I don't think Sam and Joe are on that level, particularly given that--let's be honest--Sam is having a harder time keeping up each year. Part of what Joe excels at it gently correcting Sam and helping to steer him back on track when things get too fast and he can't keep up. He does it in a way that's not patronizing to a Rangers legend. I mean that's just one element of what I like about Joe, but to your point, it's nice to just have some good guys to watch with. Sam and Joe are that.

When Sam hangs them up, I would be fine trying to find a new PBP and color guy at the same time. Of course I would be just fine with Kenny Albert and Don Maloney when then happens.

GKR is the greatest booth of all time. I’ll be devastated when that eventually gets broken up.

Dave Maloney, right? I think he’s particularly underrated. Very enjoyable. Honest and willing to be critical but just cool and doesn’t take it all that seriously. My only problem with listening on the radio is that quite often the feed is delayed substantially and I’ll get an alert or a text about something before I’ve heard it!

He talks too much. He believes his job is to fill every single second of dead air. Maybe some people like that but I don't. Watch a St. Louis Blues broadcast. Pang doesn't feel the need to talk every single second of the game. Same with Ray Ferraro and Daryl Reaugh. It's ok to let the game breathe and decompress once in a while, it's ok to let the TV viewers hear the clack clack clack of tape to tape passes or the sound of a hard shot hitting the boards. Micheleti doesn't believe in this, he believes he gets paid by words per minute so he talks even when he doesn't have anything to say or when the game just isn't giving him anything to say. This is why so much of what he does say is fluff and also why he so often seems to be halfway through droning on about some nonsensical conversation he just had that day with the opposing team's equipment guy about the importance of getting the right kinds of Gatorade on the bench lest the players get dehydrated thereby causing the team to miss the playoffs and ultimately leading to them getting relocated and said equipment guy losing his job, all while Igor Shesterkin just made an amazing save on a breakaway which went unnoticed because Joe had to finish his story no one needed to hear in the first place.

If you really pay attention and consider what he's saying instead of trying to block him out like I'm usually doing, an extremely large percentage of his comments are actually just him paraphrasing things Sam just said in his play by play.

Example:

Sam: Kakko with the puck on the right wing. Kakko cuts inside, he SHOOTS, oh, it's deflected and the puck goes out of play.

Joe: Sam, let's take a look at this on replay. You see right here Kakko's got the puck on the right wing. He takes it into the zone, great play by Kakko there. Then you'll see right here he's going to cut in, watch, here it comes, and you see he shoots it but unfortunately Letang is there to block it. Now let's kick it down to Dave at ice level.

I wasn’t a fan of Joe at first, but he’s grown on me over time. I think he does a solid job with Sam who needs a bit more help these days. I’ll feel really bad when Sam hangs them up. I’d be indifferent to Joe leaving as long as he’s not replaced with someone terrible.

I’d look at guys like Maloney and/or Valley to be a part of the next team. I’d also like to see them add a 3rd guy on the ice or for occasional commentary. Someone like a Bissonette who loves the game and has a great sense of humor. A former Ranger would be a plus. I also think it would be great for younger fans who could feel more connected.

I don't mind Joe. He is pretty good. Knows his stuff. Covers for Sam without making a big deal of it.

Saw him covering the Isles last night. He was a huge improvement. The Isles color guys are unwatchable.

The problem with Joe is who he followed. He followed the best color guy we ever had. It's not his fault and shouldn't be a reflection on his work. When you replace legends it's difficult. I think much of the problem is simply this, especially with the older fans that experienced the 80's and 90's. He's not like JD and nor is he like Chadwick who was hilarious with Gordon. Anyway, I think he's pretty good.

Have you guys actually heard some of the other color guys around the league? Most of them are freaking awful and or such homers they make listening to the game excrutiating.

Yeah add me to the club.
