He came in and was a #1D and led his team to an early summer, he was only the #1D on his team due to how bad they are, he is not a top 30 Dman, not sure how I see that as a big bonus for him other than narrative.

Also, pointwise, Liljegren is pretty close at even strength (better PPG), Seider is propped up by running a bad PP that was able to get points, not much else.
I’d recommend watching some of his defensive plays he is very, very good.

Seider's going to win but I love how triggered people (other than Leafs fans) are over Bunts being nominated.

Big congrats to Bunts. Well deserved nomination. Seider is outstanding and will definitely win it but like a poster said, put Bunts on PP1 and he's easily at 70+ with ppg not being out of the question

Yeah I honestly don't care who wins the trophy but would be funny to see Bunting win as a troll to the HF crybabies

If he was 21-22 years old he’d probably win.
I hate that this is true and here's why ...

It's a rookie of the YEAR award. It shouldn't matter if you are older or younger with more potential down the line
It's rookie of the year. Both guys are experiencing the NHL the first time regardless of their age

Think of it like this. ... a 20 year old and a 30 year old graduate pilot school and fly a plane on their own

Does it matter that one is 10 years older? Both are experiencing the feeling of flying a plane on their own

It shouldn't matter if one has more years ahead of him or whatever

Congratulations to Bunting not just for the nomination but for never giving up. For working his ASS off to get here and not taking one second for granted. For riding that bus YEAR after YEAR and never giving up hope. For showing, AGAIN, that he belongs in the show after starting game 1 of this season on the 4th line. For choosing THE MAPLE LEAFS last off-season and taking LESS than other teams had offered him on a one way. For realizing his potential and showing the type of consistency a lot of people take for granted around here. For jumping into his first playoff game at this level INJURED and STILL being the pest we have all grown to love this past year. For filling Hymans skates (who almost no one believed he could do) and, im sure most would agree, has surpassed him in that role.

I can go on and on about this guy but the bottom line is...We are so lucky to have him here. We always complain about needing heart and soul types, well here he is people. The Maple Leafs very own, Michael Bunting.

Congratulations again kid. You won't win Rookie of the Year, but to me you already have. Happy and proud to have ya! Now go out there and help win us the trophy that matters!

LFG!

Agreed. It's the rookie of the year award, not which rookie has the best potential award or who is the best u21 player. Bunting qualifies as a rookie and he had a very impressive rookie season and is absolutely worthy of consideration for the award. His age shouldn't be a factor.

It's conversations like this surrounding Seider that make other fans despise this fanbase.

A rookie D on a mediocre and rebuilding team tied for 9th in PPP, 19th in shots, 25th in hits, 8th in blocked shots, and 14th in assists across all D.

The reason it was "always going to be Seider" is because he is already an elite D man.

It's hilarious because Bunting is born only a couple of weeks after Mackinnon and is nominated in 2022. Mackinnon won the thing back in 13/14.

Cool! Bunting was such a great find by Dubas and I'm very happy that we have him under contract for another year.

Age shouldn't matter, but age matters.

Bunting is the same age as the 2014 winner, Nate Mackinnon, and a few years older than the 2017 winner, Auston Matthews.

Great job and all, but he would need much more of an edge to overcome the age gap.

The 5-7 year age difference is longer than the average NHL career for most players -- which is about 4 or 5 years.

The reason it was "always going to be Seider" is because he is already an elite D man.

On the flip side... a rookie D, playing on any established team, doesn't get the same opportunity to excel, that he did in Detroit.

If he's in Toronto, Tampa... or a whole bunch of other teams, he isn't on PP1 at all, if he's on the PP at all in his first season... he isn't on the first pairing.. on good teams, there just isn't that opportunity. So Seider, at say 30 points, on a good team... is he even in the discussion for the Calder?

Seider is going to be an Elite D in this league, and he's an amazing talent.... he came into a situation where his skill set was a need, and he took full advantage of it, earned his spot, excelled, and had a great year.

Similarly, Bunting came into a situation where his skill set was a need, he took full advantage of it, earned his spot, excelled, and had a great year.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Seider, just pointing out, all these guys came into situations where they could excel, and they did. Seider wouldn't have had the same opportunities on a top team....
