Funny stuff but still a little weird that the refs ended up calling coincidental minors. Because while Matthews technically was using “illegal equipment”, it wasn’t by choice and realistically, what else was he supposed to do here?

That's up there with the time Benning stole Peter Stastny's stick, went off for a line change and Peter chased him into the bench to get it back.

well, maybe Stastny's dad only brought him one stick to the rink...times were different back then :sarcasm:

Just take the PP?

Go get a stick from the bench while bitching to the ref so you get a call. Or just rip your stick out of the goalie’s hands. Or pretty much anything other than what he did.

Ideally yes, but he also can’t really just assume something is going to be called and take himself out of the play. The Leafs were pressing in the Columbus end, and if he skates off to get a new stick from the bench, he kills that pressure and potentially causes an odd man rush in the other direction.

I don’t think taking himself out of the play to go get a new stick is necessarily the right call, as it leaves too much up to chance and the whims of the officials. He probably would have been better off going with your second suggestion of ripping his stick back away from Merzlikins.
