Melvin Fernström finished the season with the third-most points in the J20 Nationell. This kind of production alone will draw the attention of NHL scouts, but what’s really interesting about him ishow he accumulated so many points.
The forward has some clear holes in his skill set. He lacks the quickness and the speed to escape defenders or beat them in straight-lines and he loses many of his 1-on-1 battles, but these weaknesses also shape his overall game. They forced him to develop some unique ways to score.
Fernström reads the play away from the puck, anticipates where the next pass will come, and he gets there just as his puck- carrying teammates turn to execute the play. His shot may not be the most powerful, but he gets it off from the right positions and angles to score. And the winger can also distribute the puck just as well. He finds teammates right at the door-step regularly during games, racking up assists.
“I like how he can shift directions wih his feet and play a low pace but positionally strong offensive game,” wrote Elite Prospects Swedish Scout Jimmy Hamrin in a March game report. “He gets to the right offensive zone spots and can maneuver in that space. He has a nice puck touch and has some dangerous looks with his shot."
But despite Fernström’s ability to score at his current level, we have some doubts about his NHL future. His tools project as below- average and he lacks the defensive ability to contribute in a bottom-six role.
