McKenzie: Leafs looking at Bernier

On That's Hockey, Bob McKenzie stated the following.

"As of right now (can change in a moment) I fully expect James Reimer and Ben Scrivens to be the goaltenders (on saturday), but the Leafs are kicking tires on Jon Bernier, and now that Brian Burke and Francois Allaire are gone, there may be more interest. Jon Quick is coming off of back surgery, so LA wants to make sure he is 100% before moving Bernier, but the Leafs may get more pieces back that could make it interesting"

May not be anything "new" but an update, we could be moving away from Luongo.

why?? Nonis said him self unless it's a upgrade he aint brining in a goalie... especially a unproven one

This is the immediate impact of Nonis compared to Burke.

Dave has always been a Bernier supporter, where as Burke was never too keen from my understanding. Allaire didn't want much to do with him, who is also no longer a factor.

But considering Bernier is more than likely leaving LA, and is in a "buy low" situation, he could be an interesting option to platoon with Reimer.

We may see LA bite on our depth of NHL capable players that we cant exactly find a home for on our roster.
 
Would be a sideways move IMO, Bernier hasnt proven anything more than reimer has.

Other than being a first round pick, I dont see what would be worth trading for him unless its a low cost.
 
We don't need another young goalie with promise. And I thought the Leafs said no to Bernier according to reports last week?
 
Bernier is such an awful idea. This guy isn't any better than what we have in the net RIGHT NOW.
 
I would love a Reimer/Bernier tandem. In a short season they'd be splitting time pretty evenly, and ideally AT LEAST one of them would show that they're ready to be a legit #1.

Ideally? Bernier/Reimer = Halak/Elliot

Any idea how interested they may be CW??

Any way we could pry Brown away from them?

Well except Halak supplanted his team's starting goaltender and carried them well into the playoffs on his back.

Jonathan Bernier is not Jaroslav Halak.
 
Wouldn't be opposed to this depending on what's going back. Creates internal competition for the goalie position which is never a bad thing. And IF a forward goes back, it potentially opens up a spot for Kadri to play full time.

Just so there is no confusion for anyone, it is actually Quick coming off of back surgery and they want to make sure he is 100% before they consider moving Bernier.
 
Everybody is saying he isn't an upgrade over Reimer, but he's certainly an upgrade over Scrivens. You need two goalies on your roster and Reimer isn't exactly a 70 game goalie. 1a/1b between Reimer and Bernier is better than Reimer/Scrivens IMO.

I could see Kadri being the piece going back. Rightly or wrongly, Nonis making a move for Bernier with Kadri the main piece going back would gain him a lot of fans in Toronto where many see Kadri as a bust.

They'd see it as "Burke's bust of a draft pick for a young Stanley Cup winner"

Pretty sure Brown is there to stay after the way he handled the "trade rumors" late last season.

He answered those critics pretty quickly.


But apparently LA likes Macarthur as well as other pieces down in the Marlies system.

Also, Carlyle is going to work closely with Dave Nonis and see what they can bring in to approve this team, and its also important to note what Carlyle ran last year, and what he's going to be running in this current training camp. He's had this team "thought out" for quite some time, so this training camp is closer to a conditioning camp and not a tryout.

There may be some surprise cuts and vets left off the roster, and there may be a move made before this season gets underway.

My question is, does Clarke Macarthur fit a Randy Carlyle checking 3rd line role?

I haven't heard much of what LA has coveted this off-season due to the lockout, but last year there was interest in Clarke.
