Are McDrai coach killers?

I mean, these guys have been treated as royalty since mcdavid joined the team. It wouldn’t surprise me if Katz offered to hire someone to wipe their asses if they wanted.

So while I don’t really think they’re purposely trying to remove coaches, it seems like any struggle that the team faces that can’t be pushed off and dealt with later, or handled via a trade (because we’re seemingly always in a position of weakness) is handled by firing the coach. Some deserved it, others likely didn’t, but this teams been conditioned over the last decade to fire a coach when the team begins to struggle, because we haven’t had a GM capable of putting together a good group of D, or bring in a single NHL level starter.

Imo, Woody was a victim of not being in either of the “clubs” involved in running this organization. The Mcdavid connections, and the OBC. I mean, wasn’t Paul Coffey on the Oilers payroll and simply never came to Edmonton because he wanted to coach his sons team in Toronto? Somehow a guy who’s already failed out of a “special advisor” role, was kept around and has now become an assistant coach.

So are they coach killers? In a way, yes. But I don’t think it’s their fault. I think this organization is just continuing its trend of being so poorly run that we as fans keep trying to convince ourselves that it’s the fault of certain players and not the group running the show into the ground from the top.

Connor clearly has a say in who the coach is. Unproven head coach and Paul coffey to "fix" the defensive structure.

Why make this move?

They both just had record years last f***ing season. It's pretty damn clear McDavid is injured and completely checked out at times, and Draisaitl is struggling.

I don't think it's necessarily them quitting on the coach but there's no accountability in that room. None. That's a leadership issue. They are two top class offensive stars.. but they are not displaying the hallmarks of leadership you'd expect. They have had multiple coaches brought in. and each time the coaches pay the price. You could argue that's justified in some or even most cases but Woodcroft just came out of a .650 winning percentage. He's young, thoughtful, progressive, articulate and he can coach. This is not on him. When the players see the top two non-committal on defence, not dialed in on details in the defensive zone, turning over pucks multiple times a game and not facing *any* consequences for it... of course that attitude will trickle down.

Part of it can be argued as really poorly constructed roster make up. If they had drafted and developed properly, there would be younger players pushing up through the system and contributing meaningfully in the lineup on rookie contracts. They would then have more budget to shore up goaltending and D. Instead, they have to rely on those two to carry and produce the lions' share of offence.

I don't solely blame those two, but I don't think handing them the leadership role was correct. And now they're having to install McDavid sycophants and people with clear connections to the player.. all because management, scouting and the f***ing clown owner failed to do proper jobs in every single one of their roles, over multiple years.

Katz's number one priority as we can clearly see is to retain mcdavid and drai at all costs.

Honesty what is the value of this club if those two guys leave and it's pre mcdavid era? Arcabello, horcoff, Boyd Gordon down the middle?

Literally hundreds of millions of dollars at stake so he clearly has decided to do anything to keep them happy at all costs.

Hitchcock doesn’t really count. He was hired as an interim coach. There was never any intention for him to be here beyond the one season from the get go.

But I’d be curious how many coaches other teams have gone through in the same period.

It's not like firing the coach is an Oiler invention. It's line one in the playbook since it is virtually impossible to make significant player moves early in the season.

I like Woodcroft. He did a very good job in his short time when the team was playing with confidence. But he is not overly adaptable and if the alternative was just cross your fingers and hope it seems a coaching change was almost inevitable.

Like it or not this team is not built to be a defensive first team. They will be successful when they play to their strengths. That does not mean ignoring defense. They showed in the last 21 games last year that they could both play an tempo high pressure game and limit mistakes. If they are to turn this around that is got to be the way.

Flames gotta be up there too.

Tippett was also suppose to be a short term coach.

I'll offer this up for some perspective: in Carolina, just a few days ago they had some poor efforts and their leaders admitted they were not playing up to par, and said as much to their coach. That's accountability. That's looking in the mirror first before casting aspersions behind the scenes at coaching, other players, etc.

How can they be coach killers when they have dragged this team to any "success" they have had during their tenure? McDavid is hurt now, Draisatl still leads the team in points and they're the problem?

How about getting competent management to actually give them a goaltender and decent defensemen?

Nuge is the coach killer lol (/s)

Two of the best players in the NHL and we're discussing if they're the ones to blame?

What the hell is going on here
The players quit on Mclellan and got him fired, look how well he's been doing in LA with aging stars and a younger group.

They didn't play for Hitchcock, so he wasn't brought back.

They quit on Tippett and he was fired.

They quit on Woodcroft after 18 months.

Both McLellan & Tippett had held HC jobs way longer than just 2.5-3 seasons anywhere else, with McLellan in year 5 of coaching LA.

There is definitely a pattern.
