Player Discussion McDavid

Obv not happening, but point is we can't win paying him 16

Exactly. I don't think it will happen either, although there is precedent for it happening in other leagues and even within the NHL to a lesser degree (Selanne and Kariya did this a while back, although neither were the "defacto best player in the world" at the time). I don't think McDavid will do it, because for the all the bluster about winning being the only thing that matters, I don't actually believe it unless its backed up with actions. It's just "standard sports talk" for the vast majority of athletes, and I suspect it is the same with McDavid, which is fine, its his life, he should live it how he wants.

But lets not pretend that we are going to be able to win the cup, barring some miracle run, with Drai making $14 and McDavid making $16, its not happening. Doubly so because we aren't getting McDavid of 2-3 years ago, we will be getting the 20% worse version of him that we have now (and that % is going to go up in the coming years).

window was 23-25. Skinner blew it in 23

Agree. The best chance this team had was 23, then 24 and then this year. Tending cost us in 23, and 24, and the team just wasn't good enough on the whole this year (including tending, but tending wasn't AS big of a factor this year).

The team will 100% be worse next year, and likely every year thereafter unless something absolutely drastic/lucky occurs. McDavid signing a 2-3 year team friendly deal would be one of those things, but as mentioned, I doubt that happens.

In fairness emotions will run strong here for weeks after season. Kind of a right of passage it seems.

Agreed though that the thread is dubious.

I mean when I see someone say McDavid's last two seasons were bad and a sign that he's cooked when he put up 132 points two years ago, i have to wonder what people are watching.

It doesn't matter if he has truly regressed or not and it doesn't matter what he costs. If McDavid signs for 8 years his agent can write the rest of the contract and we can live with it.

Not a replaceable player on the ice and an even less replaceable asset off of it.
This is it. McDavid hasn't failed as much as he's been failed again and again.

Who knows.

people know my sets as a poster. I always support the best players on a club, and I find fault with the pretty awful players on a club.

MY support of players is conditional on them being good or great. How anybody doesn't figure McD or Drai are booch aren't great is blind.

It's very cool we get another year of dogshit McDavid takes in the media and online. Fantastic, looking forward to it. 🤮

Of course he can write in the number and we'll sign the contract. He is still the best player in the world.

The point is that by doing so, we are preventing the team being built around him in such a way to win the cup. The Panthers highest paid player is Barkov at $10. Drai makes $14 starting next year. Bouch will be making $10+ starting next year, and McDavid will very likely be making $15-16 the year after. We won't win a cup with those contracts, full stop.

If McDavid wants to win a cup, he'll have to take less money, barring a miracle cup run of some sort where we get exceptionally lucky with matchups, health, puck luck, etc etc. I'm not saying he WILL sign a team friendly deal, in fact I think he'll do the opposite.
