Player Discussion McDavid

Honestly, I'm a complete idiot when it comes to other teams players. It is no different when it comes to other fans thoughts about Oilers players. To compare what most of us know about Oilers players to other fans is laughable, and the reverse is also true. If I went to the Leafs board and said things about their players, I'd look like an idiot I'm sure.
That must explain the idiots on the mains talking about Draisaitl doing nothing but standing in a corner and waiting to tap in McDavid's pass.

I'm looking fwd to seeing McDavid and Draisaitl go in this series.

Instead of just praying for wins and a cup every second of the game I wanna really sit back and enjoy just watching those two do their thing. It really is a privilege watching McDavid play hockey.

IMO his only comps are Gretzky and Lemieux.

Privilege is such the right word. I've been trying to do the same myself, just calm down a little and enjoy watching two all time greats at the peak of their powers playing meaningful hockey for the team that I grew up cheering for.

It really is so easy to take it for granted but its incredibly special.

Wonder why McDavid didn't sign a Crosby (8700000/year) like contract with 9700000/year?

That would have us more competive and with more cap space to surround him with better talent....

8.7 was a much bigger chunk of the cap at the time and Crosby only signed 5 years.

His next contract was one of those now illegal 12-year deals designed to keep the cap hit lower.

If Crosby wanted, he could have gotten 10M+ for 12 years. He chose 8.7M every deals cause that's what he wanted.

So if McDavid follows Crosby footsteps he would take 12.5M avv again

Regardless he has taken more of a discount than Mcdavid did. If Davo takes 12.5 again then we can say it's similar.

I don't think the 12 years matters with star players in this instance.

There is no completely fair way to compare a deal under the previous rules and a deal under current rules. However, the first 8 years of Crosby's deal would have had an AAV of just under $11M when the cap was at $64M. McDavid will be signing his deal when the cap will be at $104M. Cosby's first 8 year would be the equivalent of $17.6M in 2026-27 dollars. Even an $8.7M hit would be $14.1M. So I would say anything under $15.5M would easily be a comparable "discount".

Of course it does? Why do you think they were doing it?

His salary in the peak years was 12M. The final three it was 3M.

If you remove the last four years of the contract, that cap hit would have been 10.8M over 8 years, so 2.1M shaved off in an era when the cap was much lower than today.

McDavid's current contract was 16.7% when he signed it.... Crosby's first $8.7M was 15.3% but was shorter, so that he could re-up while still in his prime. (which would drive AAV & percentage down at his age). Rationale was that the cap would be going up and he could lock in a bigger number long term...

Unfortunately (for him) the cap stagnated. Plus by the time he was due to re-up in 2013 he'd won one cup in 2009 and then nothing, with glaring holes in the roster... it would have been like McDavid coming up for renewal in 2021 or 2022 with all the bright lights on he and Drai at the center of a poorly constructed roster. I think he liked the idea (and PR) of signing a very long contract without a raise, such that he could win another cup and cement his legacy.

It will be interesting to see McDavid's mindset this summer... and I'm sure it will somewhat depend on our success in this final.

My guess: he signs an identical deal to Drai.

McDavid's contract is a virtually identical cap% compared to Crosby's RFA deal. Crosby's first UFA contract is slightly lower but only because the Penguins were abusing a loophole that isn't allowed anymore.

I won't pass judgment on whether or not either one took a discount but either way they're both in the same boat.

It's really noticeable when the 2nd PP unit is out and someone else takes the slingshot pass, I'm just looking at them thinking "Is he even skating?" 😂

We're really spoiled seeing McDavid do his thing on a nightly basis. It's on an entirely different level from other NHL players, and that's incredible when you think about the fact that a normal NHLer like Ty Emberson would absolutely humiliate the best rec-level hockey players.

I was at drop-in hockey at 8-rinks in Bby once and Glenn Anderson showed up there, it was just after he came back from Europe and was initially going to be playing for the 'Nucks, right before the Oilers claimed him. He was past his prime for sure, but compared to the players who were dominating before he got there, he was like an eagle swooping down to grab fish out of the water. It was something to behold. Just the noise it made when he was accelerating was outrageous.

This could be anxiety and we will find out more as the series goes on, but i'm worried Mcdavid is actually hurt just a little bit. After the 1st two periods he doesn't look as explosive as the rest of the playoffs.

Or maybe FLA is just that stifling

I suspect he's got some kind of lingering shoulder/abdominal thing dating back to early last season. I could be wrong - but his 64 goal season he looked like a legit sniper. To just stop shooting the puck after that season is so strange. And when he does shoot the puck it's not the most impressive thing in the world.

They’ve got either Jones or Barkov glued on him and he still managed to almost score a shortie and set up 2 and could have had a few more assists. Played great D too. Im sure he’s sore or banged up some though.

It looks like he's got some core issue or something that has taken his game down a few levels, but yes FLA was glued to him.... annoying
