Honestly we would have been better off just keeping Mac T for a year.

That probably gets you a deal for Dougie Hamilton done at the draft as Boston wouldn't have a bias towards trading with Chia. So you're walking out of the draft with McDavid, Hamilton, and Cam Talbot (favor from Slats).

Why keep MacT? Is he gonna hire another dud coach like Eakins? Or maybe trade away another NHL defenseman like Petry

He drafted Draisaitl and Nurse and won a deal for Perron.

We would have been better off just keeping him as interim GM for a year or two instead of rushing into to getting Chia.

Hiring Chia basically locked us out of a deal for Dougie Hamilton (which then they would turn around and spend Taylor Hall to get a RD and spend a ton to sign Lucic to supposedly replace his role) immediately which then caused the team to make a stupid trade for Griffin Reinhart while Calgary got Hamilton.

With McDavid the Oilers would have had their pick of any coach, so a Todd McLellan is probably still hired (he is a Mac T-like coach to boot).

Mactavish is good friends with Mclellan, and already had him lined up to take over the job since Mclellan was on the outs in SJ.

Chia just lazily went with it instead of conducting his own coach search.

MacT never made us better and the team got worse with him as GM…the only thing he ever did good was drafting Draisaitl and hiring Eakins in order for us to be so bad we were able to be in the mix for McDavid
Andrew Ference as captain was one of the all time blunders

Chia was awful but built a playoff team and a team that should’ve been in Conference final
Unfortunately he only got worse and worse

Man, getting Dougie would've been great! I totally didn't think of that. No question he'd rather play with McJesus than rot in Calgary, and then we probably never have to sign that awful Sekera contract (didn't we JUST finish paying the buyout?). And then Ryan McDonaugh was available for our 4th overall pick at the 2016 draft, so we'd walk into 2016-17 with McDonaugh (LD) and Hamilton (RD) instead of Sekera (LD) and Larsson (RD). McDonaugh is still a major, Ekholm-level difference maker TODAY. We keep Hall, never sign Lucic, dodging another cap-crippling contract, and I can't imagine any other potential GM signing that Koskinen deal...and then maybe we have the money to sign Nurse to a more cap friendly long-term deal instead of bridging him to the worst possible time for maybe for any team ever.

As for the GM question, I would've snagged McPhee/Kelly McCrimmon before Vegas even existed.

Plus if we never get Griff Reinhart, we could've drafted Brock Boeser or Barzal...I say Boeser because Boeser was the kind of power forward any intelligent GM would've snatched up with the surplus we had at centre and he was still available. And then with that other early pick in 2015, shore up our blueline with Brandon f***ing Carlo!

EDIT: I guess to get Hamilton we would've had to give up the wasted picks we could have used to get Boeser and Carlo. Either option much, much better than the one we faced.

How can I get into THAT Timeline?

He was one of the few guys willing to sign here at that time, big difference.

The franchise was in a very different place back then, losing team, shitty old building, no franchise superstar player (unless you want to say Taylor Hall was that).

Once they got McDavid and the new arena was around the corner, obviously things changed significantly.

I guess if you look at it, Chia basically traded/gave/pissed away multiple potentially strong playoff runs for one stellar playoff run that was stolen by crooked refs.
 
Mac T was a horrible GM but still not as bad as Chiarelli. I don’t remember who else was available at that time but probably anyone else would have been better then those two.

Lawton was available when Chiarelli was hired. And wasn’t Bill Armstrong considered at that time too?

You only think that Chia was a worse GM because Mactavish managed to get himself fired before he made it to the two year mark. If he had gotten another 2 or 3 years like Chia did, it wouldn't even be close as to who would be regarded as the worse GM.

Katz also did a bit of penny pinching with regards to the firing and forced Mactavish and his 5 year GM contract on Chia's managing team, so it's probable that he had a hand in the bad decisions going around during Chia's reign.

If Mac T was the GM we’d probably have Matthews and another high pick from the 2017 draft and be on our way to a dynasty after he got fired for Mcdavid refusing to sign after his ELC unless changes are made.

People here are forgetting that Nicholson stepped in and declared he was the top man in hockey ops two days after Mactavish told the NHL every single one of his players was available. I’m no fan of Nicholson but who knows how much damage (bold moves) Mac T would have done if he hadn’t been stripped of his power before the deadline that year.
