Post-Game Talk: McDavid took that personally

I dont think Pickard is good enough to steal us some games in playoffs. I just know that unlike Skinner he may not cost us games in playoffs. Pickard is a below average goalie but that is all we really need.

They should try the backhand more. ;) Its uncanny how all of those were finding perfect openings, we're talking no look backhands, but staring at an open net feet away they miss. Its inexplicable isn't it?
Missing empty nets is bad enough, but when you make a couple great plays like Skinner and McDavid did and work so hard to get into that position, it is really frustrating This isn't Conner Brown or Mattias Janmark shooting the puck, these are talented players with a ton of skill and saavy. :D

Yes, just stating that we shouldnt think of Pickard as our saviour or anything more than a good backup goalie. Its just that Skinner is worse than a good backup goalie in terms of dependability.

no idea how pickard aint the guy for the playoffs. He is so solid in net. Skinner is like Mike Smith skating on Bananas sometimes and when he isn't his stick is like a wet strand of spaghetti. Like he has the worst luck or he's actually trying TOO hard and gets in his head. Picks is the dude to not be like that. He talks to his D men a lot more too from what Ive seen. Complete goaltender right there as the team fought for him last night. As soon as Skinner lets in 1 the team knows 2 and 3 could be very soon.
Enjoy it while it lasts. I’m sure skinner will be the guy come playoff time because as some ppl like to tell us, “He GoT tHeM tO gAMe 7 Of ThE fINaLs”. buckle up. 😕

For me and perhaps the players it’s not even the goals that Skinner lets in... it’s his look and attitude after he lets them in. I guess it’s good to have self confidence but he acts as if he is a 10M franchise goalie who just let in a goal because he was left out to dry.
I think it’s both. You can see the frustration on the players faces when he’s in net. People will say we’re not body language experts but you don’t have to be. It’s obvious. There’s a thousand mile stare on the bench when he inevitably lets in a weak one. People think because it’s a thing not to blame the goalie that the players aren’t aware their goaltender is terrible. They are.

If Skinner is indeed the starter for the playoffs his leash needs to be shorter than a marines haircut.

Agreed I think we needed a real veteran big minutes eating goalie. Not sure how they thought Frederic and Walman could accomplish that.

Well if they do and the refs are terrible, over 2.5 goals every game for Skinner by the time the second period is half over, and our players will need to find 4-5 goals to win every game ugggggh

Skating right off the ice and not tapping Skinner pads after a loss and sometimes even after a win isn't body language. Its actions, and its occurred several times.

There was a play where Walman just looks at Skinner as if "how could that go in" it was a questioning look and him new being here.

From Nurse to Ekholm to others we've seen the same look. Ekholm shaking his head a couple times.

The enthusiasm in which the team floods Pickard after a win or acknowledges him on hot stops and thanks him, its all real. Then you have Draisaitl in post games going out of his way praising Pickard for a full minute and actually stating multiple times "We all love playing for Pickard". Its way beyond supposition at this point.

Glad I am not the only one seeing it. Go with the goalie the team likes and supports. Like I said I saw Picks actually control the play and tell Bouch to calm the heck down.

I didn't like seeing 97 on the ice on that final faceoff going out to block that shot. Knobby needs to be smarter down the stretch here..
They need to win close out face-offs. That right side own zone draw has been a problem area lately. Henrique with a clear face off lost draw then chaos ensued. But agree, don't necessarily want McDavid out there - not sure if it was as a second face-off option with Draisaitl and Nugent Hopkins hurt or other reason being the super elite trusted in every situation. McDavid was only 16.7% in the dot last night.

Right shot Philp started the game strong on face-offs but finished at 44% on 8:43 toi. Not (yet) trusted for a must win critical situation.

We should go after Pageau in the offseason again

The broadcast has started to align a bit too. Previously they were all pro Skinner but recently Michaels and Debrusk and other media have talked about how affable, relaxed Pickard is. That he's friendly, gregarious, and positive. Being around people like that often feels good, and especially when they genuinely are that. He's a vet goalie calming the troops down and making key stops that further calm them down.

He has the trust of the team. They know he's focused and trying out there and will do anything to make any stop. When you have a goalie like that you more readily accept the ones that go in and you get it back. you do because Pickard is a full on team mate that earns it.

Did you miss Nuge??
Is this a trick question?

heh

Man, Nuge does it to himself at times. He'll gravitate to such a vanilla safe game that he's not even making plays. Multiple of the games that McDrai were out he didn' elevate. he did for at least one, got his hat trick, he's all happy, and than he goes back to getting little done. He teases his skills, he has so much to offer and doesn't leave it on the ice.

Off season could be a very interesting one pending how this playoff shakes out. Will have to wait to see what their needs might be. Limited trade collateral so likely a question of positional need and another old, proven guy or 'youngish' by Oilers standards a guy like Philp while using cap and assets to fix other roster areas.

But agree for deep playoff aspirations a very good 3C is gold.

Well Carlo is playing on their top pairing playing big tough defensive zone minutes. I guess we are good with Emberson.

Yeah, I think we needed Carlo more than Walman, and that's no knock on Walman, he's great. I just feel like Carlo would've been a better answer to our problems. I think with what we spent on Klingberg (pay-wise), Jones, an injured Frederic, and Walman, maybe toss in a prospect, and we could've had Carlo, Dumoulin, and Reimer...though I'm pretty satisfied with Pickard in net and hope he keeps the starting gig come playoff time. Also glad to see that most of the board feels that way about Pickard as well.

Nope. Faceoff was at centre ice after the goal and he was on then.
Yeah, it was a different sequence. It did occur, but it wasn't the one at end of game. It was interesting, and the broadcast said so that the Blues wanted McD back there for an ownzone faceoff. The broadcast jokes that most times you'd want McD off ice. Really the Blues probably had a good cry when they learned McD was playing. He seems to carve them. Different players have different teams they work well against. The Blues have not one D that can contain McD, not even Faulk who was floundering. Suter also struggles against McD.

This is one thing that's bugged me post-deadlline, Philp with ~15games isn't trusted, but would a Philp with 35 game played have more earned leash?

They've had plenty of opportunities with injuries down the stretch here to give untested guys longer looks, and they just haven't. 4C is a great example of this, Kapanen's filled in as well as you could have hoped a full time winger could have at centre. But at the end of the day, he's still a winger trying to play centre; a fill in option that can give you a couple games when needed, but not your full time option.

After not adding anyone at the deadline, Philp or even Hamblin should have been up weeks ago.

Coach barely trusted Jeff Skinner the whole season. Like he was the reason StupSkinner couldn't make easy saves or fold like a deck of cards. Knob took out his frustrations on net on our new guy and instead of letting Jeff find game time with McDavid or anything he scratched the guy a lot. Says a lot that the depth scoring and all scoring went down this year after having a good system before that worked and didn't punish guys for not scoring every chance they get.

Philp still looks a bit like a nervous puppy out there. Had plenty of opportunities to engage physically and skated away from it. From my viewpoint, he is still not ready for this league. Hopefully some day, he is.
