A GM wouldn't even be allowed to make that trade, something like that has to be OK-ed by an owner and it's not 1988 anymore and Daryl Katz isn't some meat packing plant owner hard up for cash.
Katz tries to hold onto the best players hard. Yes, I'm aware.

McDavid isn't even like just a player, he's a massive business asset that generates tens/hundreds of millions of dollars over his playing career.

The Oilers were given a Forbes valuation of $1 billion dollars, I'd say that plummets below $700 million without McDavid easily.

You also can't divorce the history of the franchise, the Gretzky trade still lingers over the city of Edmonton, the city simply would riot if something like that was done again.

What if McDavid requests a trade? Do you think Katz will just ignore his request?

Unless it's in the final year of his deal ... yes I would ignore the request. I would trade every draft pick for the next 10 years and load up the roster rather than trade McDavid because on a strictly business level ... the odds that any of those picks will generate even 1/3 of the money a McDavid does playing in hockey crazed Canada is unlikely.

This is a business first, not a hockey soap opera.

I see, I see. If I were Katz, I'd ignore the request, too. So, I can completely understand.

What about Shesterkin, Fox, and K’Andre Miller or something like that for McDavid?

When Gretsky was traded The then owner of the oilers was in need of big bucks and that trade included big bucks.
Now the owner is Katz, he is already rich If you want McDavid then your offer will start at a ton of drafts and prospects and that BIG FAT CHECK of about 1 billion USD CASH because Katz has a marketing cash cow ( McDavid) worth about 250 Million USD each year and he is only 25 so thats at least 8 more years at 250Million in marketing money.

None of those players from LA are guaranteed to be stars in the NHL. In fact, there's as good chance at least 2 of them will be busts.

Love Byfield but see nothing special with Turcotte (oft injured) and Bjornfot.

Byfield, Faber (or Grans), Clarke, 2022 1st, 2023 1st.

Both fanbase would scream - so it's probably within range :)
