McDavid surpasses Joe Thornton is career playoff points, is now 4th in playoff points amongst players with no cup

It's incredible that he has a very good chance of passing Ovechkin in career playoff points this season..
Even though Ovi's one of the greatest playoff players of all time.

He wouldn't be able to shit 30pts on sheer will unless you're talking about the 06-10 prime version of him. Overall playmaking, passing and vision aren't on the same level of Kuch, McDavid, Drai, Malkin, Crosby etc

Definitely... to use terms I commonly seen thrown around, McDavid has "peaked" by now. That's not to say he doesn't have several years of being in his "prime" left, however. He's as good as he'll ever get by this point. However, if he has 5 "prime" years left (I made up an arbitrary number for the sake of his example) before declining, that's not to say that one of those remaining seasons cannot be a statistical outlier for whatever reason.
Maybe maybe not I mean MacKinnon is currently in his peak these last two years and he's two years older.

I lean on agreeing with you. As great as these deep postseasons are for McDavid they also take a toll physically and mentally. And they are just more meaningful than the regular season. McDavid is also exiting the age bracket where players usually hit their offensive peak.

For these reasons it's likely that we've seen the best in terms of offensive output that McDavid has and will produce. I don't see him eclipsing 150 pts anymore. That's not a knock on him either, that's just life. And he's still likely a better player than he's ever been even though his productive ceiling is descending a bit.

Maybe he's peaked but I still genuinely think McDavid has a 170pt range in him, if possible. I mean scoring 132pts, 100 assists, in 73 games on god tier passing and an abnormal shot all year is INSANE. That's Gretzky-esque IMO.

He's still 28

I’m shocked the shooting/scoring winger doesn’t have the playmaking and passing as the… um… playmaking and passing centers/winger. I’m over here just shocked.

Not really. Ovi known for years as not being much of a playoff performer and the Caps only got past the 2nd round once in his career.

While true, it’s still a “yeah really.”

McDavid trails him by just 8 points while playing 73 fewer games.

And overall, let this sink in for everyone.

McDavid is probably going to be 30th all-time in playoff points with a hundred years of history before him and not even 100 games played by the time he hits 150+ by the end of this postseason.

Some guy named Brian Propp put up 64+84=148 points and no cup.

!

And the late great Adam Oates put up 42+114=156 points without winning the cup.

!!

seriously though, brian propp led two stanley cup finalists in scoring, holds the record for most finals without winning a cup (probably, haven’t looked it up), was on the 1987 canada cup winning team, and wrote the morphology of the folktale. legend.

Yeah if someone was given the choice as a kid to be a NHL legend and play 5 SC finals or work as a truck driver, we all know what they choose. Be a mail man in British Colombia

fun fact, every mail man currently working in bc has been locked out more times than brian propp was

Try making a poll in the poll section asking people: "Be honest, do you know who Brian Popp is?"
I guarantee you a majority of HF Board will answer no...
If this is true I'll be very sad.....not because I'm a huge Propp fan, but this is a hockey board, I'm assuming people coming on here are big into hockey. I get it, perhaps a lot of younger guys on here, but I know many, many players that were before my time.....not just the biggest names of all time either. Propp was a very good player in the 80s, he was one of Philly's top players for a pretty long time.

Now that I think of it though, maybe it's because hockey cards aren't a big thing anymore....back in the day, when I collected, I'd know everyone.

Looks like, health permitting, McDavid will likely become just the third player in NHL history to have 3+ postseasons of 30 or more points (Gretzky 6x, Messier 3x).

Oh and same goes for Draisaitl (well it's likely that one of them will be the third and there other the fourth unless they contribute to the same goal — but you catch my drift)!

Edit:
McDavid enters the finals with 26 pts, Draisaitl with 25. We can expect a 6-7 game finals series and the duo is keeping a productive pace. Last finals McDavid had 11 pts in 7 gp, Drai 3 in 7 but was playing hurt.

McDavid recorded his 100th playoff assist in just his 90th game.

He’s already 26th all-time in playoff assists and all 25 players ahead of him have played a minimum of 61 games more (Forsberg who has 7 more assists) and upwards of 176 more (Chelios who has 13 more assists).

A strong Finals of even just 6 games that culminates in a win should see him leapfrog Thornton, Sakic, and Forsberg, and perhaps even tie Potvin and Savard at 109, knocking on the door of Trottier’s 111 at 20th.

And somehow, he has now registered 4 more assists than Mario while still having 17 less games played.

That’s 121 points and counting over his last four consecutive postseasons. Only Gretzky seems to have scored more during a four year run.

In just one year’s time, he could potentially pass Crosby‘s 130 and already find himself inside the top 5 all-time.
