McDavid has the 4th best back to back playoff run of all time!

McDavid right now has 75 points in his back to back playoff runs in 2024 and 2025. That ranks as the 4th best back to back playoff runs of all time! Only 1987 and 1988 Gretzky with 77 combined points, 1991 and 1992 Lemieux with 78 combined points and 1984 and 1985 Gretzky with 82 combined points rank ahead of McDavid. No other players have managed to combine for over 70 playoff points in back to back playoff runs.

The sad thing is Gretzky and Lemieux won all their cups during these back to back super performances, while McDavid is looking to come up empty this year as well. Just let that sink in. McDavid is performing pretty much like Gretzky and Lemieux at their best and it's looking like it still wont be good enough to win the cup with this Edmonton team. In fact I would argue that this years Oilers might be the worst team to make the finals in the modern NHL.

Really hoping the hockey gods have something special planned for us still, as McDavid going down in 6 games would be a truly sad thing to see after a run like this. It doesn't seem right to have McDavid lose in the cup finals once again...
well if the were favorites, no one, absolutly NO ONE had them winning the west
although when in a final you want a win, but taking a step back, this season is a success
and they have overachived, winning WCF was way above expectations, its been a good season
for Oilers

I guess ya need a Fuhr or.....Barrasso?!

7 points in 5 games, 1g which is still a great stat line, but because McDavid is so god tier regularly, that's considered off by the standards we're all accustomed to.

Knoblauch is squeezing as much as he can out of mid level goalies and solid #4 defenders like Nurse, Walman, Klingberg, but the team relying on McDrai for offense isn't a sustainable over 4 series. Especially when you're playing against a team that is given the disciplinary leeway that the Panthers have gotten.

He is probably the most disrespected player in NHL,
was it like this for Gretzky also?

Crosby was also universally disliked a long time
I mean there are still people who believe that Gretzky only did what he did because of the era he played in, of course in his own era nobody else came close and yet people talked about how he was too small, weak blabla even back then.

Would argue Gretzky is the most disrespected player to this day, people act like he was all mind and no skills when reality is that while he had the best hockey brain bar none he also had an absolutely elite toolkit.

McDavid has failed to deliver in this Cup so far. He needs to have the best game of his career in Game 6.

No, not really. The Oilers just have to win somehow, if that's your flavor.

Seems to me that we've increasingly become deconstructive in our approach to team sports. It's now about the individual parts and how they do, instead of seeing the forest for the trees. Who cares if any individual player does this or that, so long as the team wins? Now, I accept that part of any discussion is caring about how well someone fits in a system or looking at sustainability of play and so on, but ultimately, we're too individualistically focused. Sometimes it feels like the discussion is more about adding layers of requirements to be "content" with a team. Not only should they win, but this player and that player should be producing at their career best and so on. It really doesn't matter, so long as the team wins.

Just win.

The Oilers are not built to win with their depth like Florida. They are built to win on the backs of McDavid and Draisaitl.

McDavid is partly at fault. Last year I gave him a pass because he had several dominating performances in the Cup Finals. This year, he hasn't.

I am literally yelling at my screen for him to shoot the puck, and all he does is just dangle in and do a drop pass. Its infuriating. I dont know if his shoulder is banged up or his wrist is hurting him, but seeing him pass up so many shot opportunities is frustrating. This guy scored 64 goals before. Now he decided he is 100% a playmaker and doesnt even want to try shooting the puck.

WHAT??? All I heard was the Eastern conference sucked and how the mighty Oilers ran through the west at some all-time clip and the Oilers were going to destroy the Panthers. I have receipts. Not just one or two Oiler fans but MANY. Many.

Ranking these by points skips possibly the best multi-year playoffs run of all time - Bossy scoring 51 goals in 56 playoff games by scoring 17 goals 3 consecutive times during the '81,'82, and '83 playoffs.

I'd rank Brayden Point's consecutive runs pretty damn highly too.

He needs to have the two best games of his life. That's the only way they have a shot. Just put McDrai together and go from there. The other lines will suffer. But they are junk anyways.

He's gonna play probably 30 some odd minutes in game 6. Draisaitl too.

It's almost worse that he scored 64 goals than if he never did. We've seen his final form so to see him struggle when the cup is on the line is disappointing.

Wont lie. Sounds made up. You have proof of legit Oilers fans in HF saying we'd destroy the Panthers?

So he is only behind Gretzky and Lemieux? Yest there is another post saying how he's being shutdown. And last year he got 11 points in finals and the Conn Smythe but was also shut down.

Maybe the reason Edmonton is losing isn't because of McDavid?
