So.. Johansson left the game with an upper-body injury, didn't return and he's now soft?

I mean, it's an elbow to the head. Should be a major and likely few games since it caused an injury.

Nobody believes McDavid is going to get suspended though. Perhaps a fine?
McDavid is a repeat offender, he got 2-games for an illegal check to the head back in 2019.

I can see why Oilers fans might be like "this is incidental contact and probably shouldn't result in a suspension". What I don't understand is the reactions praising the elbow, or making fun of Johansson (a very mild mannered player, btw) for getting injured. I've met a lot of cool Oilers fans, but the loudest ones in here are an obvious bunch of scumbags. McDavid was subtle with it, why can't you be?
its just oiler fans pushing back against the immense hate oiler fans get here on HF.

I dont think any of us actually believe an elbow to the head is a good thing.

I just see a player bracing for contact. Johansson went down a little to hard and in a physically impossible manner compared the contact. He looked like he got shot. Im sure he got hurt, but the sell job on top of it was very WJC.

That is a pretty light elbow. Nice embellishment on the play as well throwing his hands up in the air like that. Maybe it could have been a penalty but that is a pretty minor play to suspend a guy for.

If that was McDavid getting elbowed you guys would buy a group flight to NYC and burn down the NHL office
I think this post says it all.

Some guys in here might have never played hockey. If u get hit in the head by an elbow with pads, while both are skating fast, there is almost no way you keep standing on your feet. Can't believe that some people would say this was a dive by Johansson.

McDavid is an awesome player and I've got no bias against him, I really love watching him play the game. But that was a dirty play and the NHL really should start treating players equally when it comes to suspensions. But I guess thats never gonna happen.

I wouldn't mind a 1 game suspension. Give him some rest, Load management. We play some weak team coming up. Buffalo and Vancouver 2x.

Great flop and late reaction too.

That is now 2 games in a where Connor and then Leon get a slewfoot. League just sits back and laughs.

McDavid did not even change anything in that clip. Arm didn't move. His eyes didn't even move. I would tell that kid to stop skating into somebodys arm TBH

6 years ago? A bit outside the 18 month window for a repeat offender

The nhl should start reffing games equal then, star players put up with far more than scrubs and are expected to play through it to create some false parity

No fine expected. Just like no fine expected for Hartman slew-footing Draisaitl. Everything is as it should be.
To this point in the topic, "slew-footing" shows up 38 times. I get that it might be due to it being one of the trendy terms for a dirty/dangerous play, but if people don't understand what a slewfoot is, they probably shouldn't use the term.

Could/should have been 2min, but there's not much there.

McDavid's more or less controller disconnected after the drop pass, as he doesn't change his line or move his arm much. Johansson's puck-focused and tries to stop and jump around McDavid after (RE: not at) the last moment, and gets a face full of elbow.

It's a poor angle on the video (do we have a better one?), but if McDavid properly chicken-winged him, we'd see his hands/stick move far more as his elbow went out.

It doesn't even seem like McDavid reacts after "contact." Normally when a guy is trying to elbow someone, his arm comes flying up afterwards because he was bracing for the contact. But there's nothing. At most this is a 2 minute penalty.

I mean, I even struggle to see it as a two minute penalty, honestly. I wouldn't be mad about it being called as 2 minutes, but anything more than that seems ridiculous to me.

McDavid basically doesn't move and is skating in his own ice. His hands are on his stick that's at waist level. Literally you have to watch it multiple times at 0.125× speed to even tell if there was any contact.

It sucks that Johansson is hurt, but like if McDavid's trying to injure him, for one he's probably looking at him, and for two... You'd think he'd actually put some gusto into it. Idk.

You'd be surprised how much shit that happens to McDavid we don't even say a peep about on the mains. Or complain about.

Last game for example, a play I've never seen in the NHL, a single leg MMA takedown on McDavid. Dude double hand grabs McDavid's single leg, lifts it sky high to send him tumbling to the ice. And no I'm not talking about the Slew foot that also happened to him that game.

Or how bout in the SCFs, Tkachuck headlocks McDavid and throws not one not two but FIVE underhand punches to his face.

There is simply not enough time to talk about all the shit that happens to McDavid that the League turns a blind eye to.
Are you gonna cry?

Mcdavid did flinch his elbow a bit but Johansson dropped like a sack of hammers. So either Johansson is soft or he tried to sell it.
Mcdavid will get a fine at most.
With the way equipment on the elbow pads is so hard that even a slight elbow can do much damage to the face. If it's soft elbow pad, you probably won't see this.
