QuantHockey only allows me to search 1000 players (forwards and defensemen seperately), but at least no forward with more than 154 assists, or defenseman with more than 39 assists has managed assist per game or more, other than the three you mentioned.

He’s led the league in assists four times.

Finished second three times.

The two times he hasn’t been top 2 was his rookie season when he missed 37 games and 2017-2018 when he finished 1 assist shy of tying both Giroux and Wheeler for first.

The only players who have led the league in assists more times than McDavid are Gretzky (16) and Orr (5). Yes, he’s already done it more times than Mario Lemieux, who picked up two of his three firsts at age 30 and 31.

His four times leading are two more than Crosby, Malkin, and Ovechkin combined.

Through nine seasons, he already has eight 60+ assists seasons, good for 7th most all-time. Assuming he picks up 33 more this season, he’ll equal Lemieux and Francis’s nine.

If he gets to 70 this season, only Gretzky (16) and Lemieux (8) would have more than his seven.

Sometimes I wish he was a bit more selfish lmao. He has at-least another 60 goal season in him if he really commits to it. He was feeding Hyman at the beginning of the season, then decided to do it himself after it wasn’t working and had 11 goals in his next 14 games.

I learned that assists are worth shit in the Lane Hutson thread, so I guess that makes McDavid a bum!!

Surely somebody else had an assist per game when they turned 27-28 no?

Grezky played 696 games for Oilers and got 1086 assists.

McDavid can equal that, he needs only about 17 assists per game for the next 24 games.

Gretzky is truly insane.

It's too bad hockey isn't appreciated much outside of your typical hockey countries (which is not that many)...Gretzky would have been a global superstar.

If McDavid signs an extention with Oilers he's going to surpass Gretzky's numbers with the Oilers in goals, assists and points and after that Gretzky won't lead any team in all time goals, assists or points. Really makes you wonder if that could be something that keeps McDavid from signing with the Oilers. Does he really want to be the one to dethrone the great one and make him number 2 in Edmonton?

It looks like Adam Oates edges out McDavid by three assists:

Obviously McDavid's accomplishment is more impressive, since it was in a substantially lower scoring environment. But I think Oates is the only other player in NHL history to scored >1PPG over (a completely arbitrary) 672 games.

EDIT: it looks like Paul Coffey did this too:

As an aside, this made me realize how few elite playmakers there are today. McDavid and Kucherov are obviously, and some others like Draisaitl, but they’re also great goalscorers and just all around offensive players. Where are the pass happy top 10 center types like Oates, Thornton, Sedin, Francis, Getzlaf, Backstrom, etc.?

I know they aren’t great for much but for era adjusted stats at the end of last season he had an adjusted 681 games (10 extra from 2020 and 26 extra from 2021) instead of his actual 645. His assists though in that games played mark are second only to Gretzky.

Most assists at 681 GP adjusted from HockeyReference:

Gretzky: 453 G, 825 A, 1278 P (1.88)
McDavid: 361 G, 694 A, 1055 P (1.55)
Lemieux: 479 G, 684 A, 1163 P (1.71)
Crosby: 348 G, 622 A, 970 P (1.42)
Orr: 252 G, 613 A, 865 P (1.27)

Insanely impressive stuff from 97. I think when era is taken into account in any way he should be able to hold up as second to the goat in this regard throughout each career stopping point.
