Mcdavid 5min Match Penalty: Cross check to the face of Garland (Will have a hearing)

Connor should turn down the Four Nations after this, the league has never cared about his safety and now are actively singling him out for disciplinary action. Why let them keep profiting off him?
Is it “singling him out” when he blatantly cross checked a guy in the head, which was an automatic game misconduct and suspension until further review based on the time left in the game? And also while a guy from the other team received the same penalty and likely will face the same disciplinary action? What a take.

It is when McDavid faces the same or worse abuse on a nightly basis without so much as a call, and Myers hasn't had a hearing announced yet.

If he's that much of a goon then he shouldn't represent Canada. Let's see how Bettman feels about his caveman in chief's decisions then.

It's not singling him out, he deserves every bit of the suspension he gets for this. He should however be frustrated that a guy can tackle and hold him for 10 seconds without a call, and then even admit he tackled and held him in the post game interview. For all the supposed preferential treatment that many claim McDavid gets he sure is low down the list for penalties drawn for a guy who plays as much as he does, who has the puck as much as he does, and who puts defenders in vulnerable positions to take penalties as much as he does.

But there's no point rehashing this. I think by now most hockey fans know how terribly officiated this league is.

Both bad, both worthy of suspension. The suspension for these things is never enough to actually deter it though. If they started with a minimum of 5 games then it’d be an absolute rarity. Thats a very separate discussion though.

You should try watching the replay again - Garland grabbed hold of McDavid's arm and didn't let go. That's the reason McDavid couldn't get up.

Or, just believe what you want. You do you.

McDavid c;learly didn't try to get up[ until it no longer his team's advantage. Yes, Garland was happy to keep McDavid with him on the ice too but again, the narrative that McDavid had no choice but to take matters into his own hands is a false one.

Absolutely suspension worthy. Don't care what the reasoning is for his reaction, that type of action is inexcusable. It was a stupid thing to do and he should suffer the consequences.

Several people in this thread are calling him a goon, which he clearly isn't. If he doesn't want to represent his country (which he obviously does) and he thinks it will somehow help his case, then that's his prerogative to refuse to play. The tournament will go on with or without him and there are tons of players willing to take his spot. None of this has anything to do with this situation though, McDavid thought he was being interfered with, but blatantly cross checking a guy in the head in response is over the top and is never an acceptable play. He earned his upcoming suspension.

What new information?
That he is having a hearing.

I'm convinced you've never even put a pair of skates on before if you think its easy to get up from that position with a guy holding your arm down like that.

Matthews got 2 for a retaliatory cross checking after receiving one up high. Gotta think Mcdavid gets 2 or 3 here.

2 games seems about right for that one. Don't really give a damn what Garland did. Fight him if you are that mad about it lol
The cross check is obviously not justified in any situation, but you're right they should honestly just let everyone do what Garland did. Would make for an excellent hybrid of hockey and WWE. I wonder if it might attract more viewership and revenue through wrestling fans getting interested in the sport.

I’ve heard lots of fan bases use the ref excuse for losing games, but this is the first time I can recall the ref excuse being used to try to excuse a deliberate attempt to injure a player. 😆
While it’s McDavid and the nhl has always had different rules for suspending superstars, I don’t think they can avoid giving him 2 games here. That’s a dangerous play and needs to be acted on.

LMAO what a ridiculously terrible take. Really? It's like you are buffing the halo over the head of the baby Jesus. Don't really care how many times Connor McWhiner has been hit, that is a dirty play 10 times out of 10. Obviously a Leaf fan here but seeing what Matthews got for a hit with zero history, and Reilly getting 5 games for a hit that was no worse... If he gets anything less than AT LEAST 2 games it will be a crime. Oil fans whining about officiating is becoming the laughing stock of the league and everyone knows it.

Would the Oilers have turned the puck over if there was an impending call?
There's not a single point where the Canucks get control of the puck from when the initial sequence happens until the play is blown dead to give McDavid a major penalty where the ref could have given Garland an interference penalty.

...Which would have been a tough enough solo call to make anyways because by the time since McDavid took down Garland during incidental contact til Garland was able to get up himself (had McDavid off of him) but kept the hold, there was less than 2 seconds to decide on that single penalty (where the Canucks didn't have the puck) before McDavid was punching Garland in the head.
