McDavid probably gets away with a fine because Garland FAFO'ed

Curious in which world McDavid didn't have him pinned to the ice exactly like he did McDavid literally 1 second prior? Did he cross check McDavid in the head when he got up....maybe I missed it🧐

McDavid has a history
But not a history that will be considered in this scenario. According to NHL rules, a player is considered a "repeat offender" if they have been suspended within the previous 18 months. McDavid's only other suspension came in 2019. Scenarios where punishment wasn't handed out - like the Mojo incident last week which was deemed non-punishable, can't be used as evidence.

Refs are supposed to be there to call things before it gets too heated. They failed to do so. This is on them. Can't fault McDavid for being angry that this hobbit is attached to him when his team is trying to win with 30 seconds left.
So if the police don't stop someone from keying my car it's their fault when I commit murder? I'm not responsible at all? Just going to leave my car in my neighbours driveway, brb.

Are you equating what McDavid did to murder? Wtf? Bit of a stretch there bud 😆

The refs not calling a penalty isn’t a reasonable justification for hitting a player in the head with your stick on purpose lol objectively not a hockey play either.

That's one way to look at it. I think what others are suggesting, is that if the refs had called the holding penalties, it wouldn't have escalated, just as if someone prevented your car from being keyed, you wouldn't have murdered someone in retaliation. While this argument is an attempt to shift blame somewhat to the officials, I don't think most are outright saying that McDavid and Myers hold no responsibility for their actions - just that if the refs had done their job, things wouldn't have escalated as they did. The ones who are suggesting it isn't McDavid's fault need to give their head a shake though.

McDavid is showing that if you f*** with him, he'll strike back. I'd rather see a bit of emotion from him so the next time Garland thinks about giving him a hug on the ice, he'll remember that cross check to the neck didn't feel so nice.

Two games for McDavid and Myers is my guess. Myers should have more as his crosscheck was more forceful and unprovoked.

That’s fine. You are allowed to like what he did….but he deserves a suspension for doing it lol

We can like what he did for the reasons above, but we also have to acknowledge that he crossed a line and should get a fair punishment for it. I don't mind McDavid pushing back, but he has to be careful to not go over the line.

Oh I'm fine with the suspension, but do I think he was wrong to do it? Hell no. If he doesn't do what he did, players will see that weakness as a green light to f*** with him. Sometimes a little suspension is worth it.

When someone makes an analogy they are comparing the relationship between two things. They aren't comparing the two things directly or saying they are the same or "equal" as you put it.

I understand your position here, but could it not also lead to more players screwing with McDavid in hopes that he takes a suspension?

That was a joke to highlight the problem in what the guy I was responded to said. I've posted in here several times giving the same perspective. If the refs don't let Bouchard get away with taking Pettersson out of the play with a hold 2 zones away from the puck earlier in that shift, then that same braindead ref doesn't watch Garland holding McDavid and go "well I didn't call that one so I can't call this". Game management is stupid and it's how you end up with escalation.

Bouchard shouldn't be allowed to hold a guy because his team is 1 goal back late in the game.

Garland shouldn't be allowed to hold a guy because you didn't call Bouchard that same shift.

Period.

But nothing about any of that let's you crosscheck someone in the head. In every single egregious dirty play in history the guy doing it thinks he's justified in his head. He was mad about a missed call or something that was said etc. Having a reason to be mad doesn't make acting out OK.

Not according to Friedman who had some other explanation for it.

Imo it's worth the risk. I'm sure after this McDavid will be reflecting on his actions. I think players are always gonna try and knock him off his game. So he'll have to work on not giving into frustration. But I understand why he was so frustrated in that situation.

Your "analogy" wasn't worth a serious reply.

He needs to retaliate in a way that isn’t cross checking a guy in the face then.

1 game suspension nothing more. Garland played a stupid game and won a stupid prize. No one deserves to be cross-checked in the face, but even he wasnt surprised he got a face full of stick

Lots of classic pearl clutching in here. Reminds me of when I was a Crosby hater at the beginning of his career. Reading these posts just made me realized how corny I sounded lol.

He needs to retaliate in a way that isn’t cross checking a guy in the face then.

He does that literally every other game. Dude gets mauled and rarely ever reacts. This was egregious and he reacted egregiously.

Sure, because it refutes everything you’re parading in this thread.

Garland’s hold as per his own words is McDavid’s fault and Canuck fans remain the brightest on these boards.
Luckily the videos been posted numerous times and everyone is free to see the truth, they don’t need either of our parading 😉

If you are saying your response wasn't serious and you were just kidding when you clearly revealed you don't know what an analogy is then... I guess I missed the joke. You surely missed the point I made with that post: One can be justifiably angry, but that anger doesn't justify retribution (which is what you keep defending by saying you have no problem with someone crosschecking a player in the back of the head).

Garland can be upset Bouchard didn't get called for holding. That is justified. It doesn't justify holding McDavid.

McDavid can be justifiably upset he was taken out of a play by an illegal hold. Doesn't justify him crosschecking someone in the head facing away from him.

I can be justifiably upset at someone keying my car. But any escalation, i.e. assault, murder, attacking their family, whatever you want here. Is not justified. Even keying their car isn't justified even if its equivalent. This is just basic ethics. If you hold that an act is wrong when done to you, to the extent it makes you angry, committing it yourself is wrong.

Deliberately crosschecking or aiming at someone's head is wrong. If you want to see more of that, then you'd better not have any issues if McDavid is out with a concussion long term because of a dirty play. That'd just be a hockey play too.
