"Doing something about it" in hockey generally means you fight. Not cross check a guy in the head and risk serious injury. But obviously McCrybaby isn't gonna drop the gloves.
I think fighting is part of the game and should remain part of hockey, but a player like McDavid should never be required to fight. Throughout hockeys history, many of the leagues top stars often had "tough guys" stapled to them, both to protect them and fight their battles for them. If certain stars were not expected to drop the gloves in the 80s and 90s regardless of the opponent, they certainly shouldn't be expected to in 2025. If McDavid was a regular cheap shot artist my opinion is probably different on this one, but plays like this aren't the norm for McDavid.

56 pages and Oilers fans still ignoring Bouchard holding Pettersson on a similar play just about 30 seconds before the Garland and McDavid wrestle match. That could've been called resulting in the McDavid and Garland incident never happening. You have to consider the context in terms of the reffing.

Again, Garland stick checks McDavid who then hits Garland to the ice to maintain Oiler possession. Garland is holding onto McDavids arm at this point as they fall to the ice. McDavid is now on top of Garland. Garland maintains his hold on McDavid, but, here, what ya'll seem to be ignoring is McDavid not moving a muscle to change the situation. He's happily on top of Garland as Bouchard gets a shot opportunity. His legs aren't engaged until that opportunity dies down and then McDavid actually tries to negate his current situation by trying to get up. Garland maintains his hold of his arm and McDavid responds with a punch to Garlands upper body (head?) to get lose which he does sort of. They are still engaging with each other and Garland then, for a lack of better word, man handles McDavid in a hold.

Are you really going to try to argue that Garland out powers McDavid - i.e Garland is the much more physical player, stronger, and tougher than McDavid? He's like 5'7 or 5'8 and a skill player himself. An agitator for sure but he's not some imposing bully.

Whatever Garland and McDavid are doing to each other is negating the other players previous action. After the punch to Garland that was uncalled, Garlands got some leeway to again engage McDavid in a hold. Garland could've been called for a minor for holding and McDavid one for roughing at that point. It's not a pretty hockey play but it really is 50/50 and a back and forth situation. That should explain what I believe the refs are seeing on the play. It's too bad refs aren't ever asked about it, would be interesting to hear this one out. Also, Oilers are in possession during the entire sequence so even if a call were to be made on Garland (wrongly in my mind as both players should have received minors on the play) it wouldn't change anything.

3 games seems appropriate for both Myers and McDavid. Don't throw hissy fits.

Crosby obviously knows what he’s talking about but people will still take this further than it needs to. McDavid still deserved the 3 game suspension but I can see in the moment why he resorted to that. And you can tell from his face that he regretted it right after.
Yes, the problem does not lie with McDavid, its about the Edmonton fans not admitting he was deserving of a suspension, that is why the thread is 56 pages and counting. Add the fact that McDavid should have been suspended at least 3 times more before this incident and you can see why people are extra invested into it!

If McDavid had been disciplined for previous infractions I am pretty certain he would not have cross checked Garland! So its a wake up call for him that he cant do whatever he wants and get away with it! Hopefully this makes him play a less reckless game going forward!

And if DOPS starts handing out consistent punishments for similar infractions regardless of their name or status that will also help the game INCLUDING McDavid, so Connor should actually come out and say suspending him was the right thing to do for players safety!

Crosby, Ovechkin, Lemieux, Gretzky. All of them have dropped the gloves multiple times in their careers. McDavid and Draisaitl, who have never dropped the gloves, don’t have the excuse that they’re too good.

Sure, you don’t have to fight, but if you’re hot enough to hit someone in the head it’s so much better to drop the gloves and punch him like a man instead of cross checking him in the face like a dishonourable rat.

Time to close this thread. Nearly everyone in this thread are embarrassing themselves and the fan base they represent. I am a Canuck fan in my view Garland got what he deserved, he can not hold McDavid jock strap so he decided to treat him like a giant teddy bear and keep him on the ice. Refs should gave him 2 minutes for Holding, hugging or interference. Like many, I play in a beer league and players who do what he did? They are usually not invited back for a few weeks

Where do you draw the line? He has a vicious check from behind that could have paralyzed Oduya that was deserving of a game misconduct and several games suspension. Suspended for a hit to the head that injured a player. Attacked Kotkaniemi with a flying elbow that easily was intent to injure and should been a slam dunk suspension.

Spearing a Canucks player in the throat. Intentionally elbowing another Canadiens player #94 that should have been a major and a suspension. Elbowing Johansson concussing him. And then crosschecking Garland in the face.

And thats just from the top of my mind. McDavid has 5-6 cheap shots and should have been suspended at least 5 times by now (and if he had been punished accordingly this 3 game suspension would have been 10+ games since he would be a repeat x 5 offender)

Are you saying a player can have like 7 or 8 attempts to injure before they have a reputation?

The league has let McDavid off the hook on at least 3 previous incidents that should have been multiple games suspension, that is a fact!

Yup. McDavid is dirty. The ones that bother me the most are the sneaky little slashes on the back of the dman's skates. When McDavid is chasing the dman into the offensive corner. Those are plays that deserve to get his face punched in. Time to push McDavid around. He obviously can't handle it. And too many cowards on the Oilers to respond.

I think the suspension is correct. McDavid cant be doing stuff like that.

He is, however, right when calling out the league for not protecting their star players. I mean, you can basically hack and slash the McDavids and Kucherovs as much as you like since you'll eventually draw a penalty once someone responds.

Its basically a lose-lose situation unless the refs starts going full IIHF.

Three games is deserved here. Hopefully he comes back pissed off about it.

I don't think any Oilers fan can say McDavid didn't deserve a suspension for what he did, but to equalize it with Myers is what I find difficult to accept. One was provoked, and sure McDavid shouldn't have done it hence the suspension, the other was a mindless cross check to the face for no reason. One was heat of the moment retaliation the other was a cheap shot at a fellow pro.

I'd also have brought in the refs and sent them down to the ECHL for a 2 week stint reffing down there as punishment for the inept non call or better still no games for 2 weeks and no pay for it.
