Canadians becoming complacent about Russia? You would never know it by the posts you see in this thread. You'd think that Canada was playing for a World Championship instead of watching it on TV. Canada was definitely the best team in Sochi and deserved to win, but the margin is very narrow. Even a slight uptick could dislodge them from their slot. Meanwhile, Canada is on a losing streak at the WJC, and the Russians are consistently beating the Canadians in medal round games at that level. Although Canada may list 500,000registered, the past week proved that there is still not sufficient depth to medal at the World Championships.

Russian hockey appears set on a course of expansion that could easily triple or quadruple the number of youth players in the next 5 or 6 years. Its going to take a few years to reap the benefits of it, but that is a level of expansion that Canada, which is already maxed out, cannot match. I certainly do believe that the long range future of hockey may well be Russia vs. the United States, but there just isn't that much impetus in the US for hockey to grow. Its still mainly a regional sport in the US, in the Northeast and Midwest, and hockey just isn't that popular in comparison to other sports with which it competes for the best athletes. The more that the KHL catches on among local fans, the more young kids are going to want a hockey career. Be careful not be too complacent!

I understand hockey is big in Russia, But man have you ever been to Canada? 99.9% of us are born on skates, that's male and female. Not to mention the size difference between Western/Eastern parts of the world. Right now Russia is focused on FIFA and Canada could care less because we continue to spend MILLLLLIONS on hockey. Canada. And im sure you are very happy with this win, but common Ovechkin.... meanwhile Crosby or any other player from the Canadian Olympic roster is just chillin or still in the playoffs. its almost like we don't care. Besides you rubbing this in will never compare to Canada mens and women's winning gold on Russia soil. No trolling at all just talking hockey.

Does any russian in this thread even know what the award "mvp" stands for? It sure doesnt seem like it.

You are wrong here. Most fair would be a player scored maximum goals. But a goaltender brought his team to QF and through play-offs can be named as well. I agree here entirely.

The reason that Canadians are genuinely terrified of Russian hockey is a fear for the future.

The NHL first allowed its players to participate in the Olympics in 1998. There was also a World Cup of Hockey in 2004. Both of these tournaments were BEST ON BEST. Russia has ZERO Gold Medals in the 6 Best on Best Tournaments since 1998. Russia has ZERO Medals the last 3 Olympics, and have not won in the Olympics since 1992 as the CIS.

Canada has won the last 4 out of 5 Best on Best Tournaments (2002 Olympics, 2004 World Cup, 2010 Olympics and 2014 Olympics). Nothing more needs to be said. Canada has no fear of the future. I think the Canadian team in the future will be a lot better with amount of young players to choose from. This year- we left off a guy like Claude Giroux, one of the best players in the world from the Sochi team. All since last year- guys like you were saying how Russia was going to beat Canada on the "Big Ice, Russia's backyard, and Russia will get its revenge". What happened- they lost in the QF again at home.

How can Russia be better than Canada when it has not won a BEST ON BEST tournament since 1998, have ZERO Medals these last three Olympics. Please do not bring up the WHC when every nation does not have its best players, and you had your starting goalie from Sochi, guys like Malkin and Ovechkin, and Canada had Ben Scrivens (a career NHL backup) as ours.

Im sure we will still be celebrating the Olympics in 3 years. North Americans prefer Nhl playoffs not some world cup that takes place at the same time. Meanwhile the olympics they take a break from nhl.

I understand perfectly. The Stanley Cup is what really counts in Canada, and that is the final culmination of your national sport. I just don't understand why so many Canadian posters have had to take the time and effort to tell us that they really don't care about Russia's World Championship. This is the exact message posted by hundreds of other posters who went to great lengths to testify to their indifference. Many Russian hockey fans could care less about the Stanley Cup and are focused instead on the WC. Its a big World!

The reason that Canadians are genuinely terrified of Russian hockey is a fear for the future. They've seen Russia (aka USSR) catch up even with them in the past and probably surpass them, creating the need for a home-staged Canada Cup tournament, which even then Canada won by the margin of single goal in over 20 games. Canadians fear the likelihood that it will happen again, which is why they cry out so emotionally over a game that took place long after their team had flown home to Canada. Russia is busy in an expansion of youth hockey, and what happens if Canada eventually just can't match the numbers? Truthfully, no other country poses this same threat to Canadian self-images of superiority. They fear the inevitability, maybe as soon as 2018, where they will be looking up the podium to shake hands with the new sheriff in town.

Maybe you should follow the CHL and see the players we continue to produce. no fear man. your English is very Western..... hmmmmm

Because Canadians dislike to see any other country win any Hockey we don't care we wont lose any sleep by no means. the issues are other countries rubbing it in. Us Canadians being sore losers as well. But if Canada would send Elite players to match other rosters I'm sure Canadians would follow it alot more.

I'm sure Russians care more about the Olympics then WC.

What I don't understand is why Canadian fans are so much caring about foreign, not even Canadian cup. NHL is a national hockey league of the United States of America. Canadians are guests there and still they care about it as the most valuable championship. The only national thing for Canadians is CHL. They care about pure American teams with some Canadian player participation and they tell us nothing is more important. Seems very strange for me.
P.S. I would understand if it was Canadian Cup. But NHL. Nothing is Canadian there but still most important.

What? Who cares how many teams are canadian there? The inventors of hockey and best hockey nation doesn't even has own hockey league! It plays in the foreign.
Does it seems normal to you? Swedes have their league, Finns have their league, Americans has their league, Switz the same, Russians the same, everybody has leagues, but not canadians - the best hockey nation! Does it sound wierd?

This is just something you assume. Because no one is this idiotic.
