The only way for Austria to play next year in Russia is that the germans let them win.

It´s hard but the team is not strong enough to win a game with his own strength.
Against the Swiss we won the game because the swiss don´t accept us as a Hockey Nation:(

so i will ask the germans for :help:

Germans actually played worse than the Austrians in the game against Latvia, so I wouldn't be too sure about that.

It's probably going to be a very close game.

would be nice to get a little revenge for the olympic qualifier

anyway it's nice that this isn't some relegation final

Austria can still end up 4th if they get 6 points against Germany and Canada. This is quite a paradox that out of the bottom four teams, the last one to have a chance to qualify is also the most likely to get relegated.

And nothing against Germany, France and Latvia, but I hope that Austria stays in the top division. They were very unlucky to be relegated after winning two games in 2013, and have shown some good things this year. Clearly the best of the usual elevator teams.

I'd rank Kazakhstan higher.

I'd rank Kazakhstan higher.

I don't think so, Kazakhstan hasn't won a game in the top division since 2006, Austria managed to at least win one every year and had unlucky relegations in 2009 and 2013.

Anyway, no point in debating this, we'll know in a few hours if this is the right year for Austria.

Kazakhstan is in no way worse than Austria. Sure, they might not have any wins, but they've went to the OT a number of times (including twice against the US) and have had a number of close, 1-goal games.

They also defeated France and had a very close game against Latvia in the Olympic qualifiers last year.

Saying that they're 'clearly the best out of all elevator teams' is a biased opinion that is not based on any facts. If they were clearly the best, they wouldn't be an elevator team.

I like France more right now. QF last year beating Canada, Slovakia, Denmark & Norway(OT loss to CZ, one goal deficit to Sweden). Got some top talent that competes with the best 2nd tier teams and plays exciting hockey(troubles to score this year tho). They completely outplayed Germany this tournament which would've kept them out of trouble but just couldn't get it done. Would hate to see them relegated.

I guess this shows the hockey world is growing, when it's not clear cut who the best 10-16 teams are. They can all reach the QF in a really good year. Slovenia is the worst team this tournament from where I'm sitting and they made strides at the Olympics and have a superstar player. Things could be worse for sure.

By elevator teams, I meant Austria, Slovenia, Kazakhstan and Italy. I agree that France is now above that tier.

And Austria up 1-0 late in the 2nd, a score that would secure Germany's spot in the top division and boost Austria's chance. I wonder if Germany will give everything they can to tie it.

And Austria gets the extra point! Not undeserved, they wanted it more than Germany.

So Switzerland clinches fourth place, Germany stays up and Austria moves above France and Latvia, but can still go down if France either beats Latvia in OT or gets a result against Sweden.

Well, you can always root for France, if you don't like us. You're in front of us in the table, so if France wins, you will survive as well.
If France wins in overtime though that's luck run out for the Austrians. It would also go farther to the prediction made by an American journalist who I second that the 3 teams who will make it out of the qualifiers will be Latvia, Austria, and Denmark, though Germany looks to have a really good shot too depending on how the groups are formed. However, as the rankings stand right now, Denmark, Latvia, and Slovenia in Q1 would form a sort of group of death which is why I don't like the qualification system but that's for another forum. Besides, Latvia probably deserves it more. They're fielding an A Team-second string like Austria right now as opposed to France's legit A Team-Bellemare. Really, watching Latvia play is quite enjoyable, I'm just not a fair-weather fan.
