it doesn't to be honest. Why is a 34 yr old winger the right move for the team? We are trying to get brazal a permanent winger. Patch is only around for 1 year. Hague will have to pay what 3-4M? I rather get a younger winger that can develop with Brazal and I can find another D man to play the Left side.
And to your point to make this work (this deal) the Isles then have to move a few players. So it's just not making this 1 trade, other trades to move out salary have to be done as well to make it work.
Why would we help out Vegas, they want to move salary....they get pennies on the dollar or find someone else.
Max Pax is older and injury-prone, yes. But he fills a need, which is goal-scoring. Over the past three seasons, he's played 158 games and scored 75 goals. That equates to 39 goals over a full season, which would be the best goal-scoring production an Islander has had in quite some time now.
So yeah, let's not pretend he's Andrew Ladd or something.
Of course I would rather get a younger and healthier goal-scorer, but he fills a need if the NYI have to resort to a more realistic option.
If the Isles (or any other team) wants to overpay Hague that much then Vegas will just take the offer sheet compensation. Chances are they'll get Hague signed to a bridge deal under 2 before it ever comes to that though.
Young, talented and hulking LD just entering his prime? I don't mind "overpay[ing]" for that.
Makes much more sense paying someone for their prime years than it does paying a past-his-prime UFA. And if it only costs the NYI a second round pick to do so, it's a no-brainer.
