They’re actually close in terms of goals relative to league scoring rate and relative to other top goalscorers, but both have a slight edge to ‘09. ‘09 he was the better ES goal scorer and in ‘14 he was the better PP goalscorer, and also had more PP minutes relative to the other top scorers. I think this is ‘09 due to the slightly better relative numbers and I think the ES scoring is more impressive, but while there’s obviously a large difference in overall play in some, like these two, so many of Ovechkin’s goal scoring seasons outside of ‘08 are pretty much just splitting hairs.
