Prospect Info: Matyas Melovsky C 171 Overall Round 6 2024 DRAFT

not watching for obvious reasons, but posted some goofy numbers tonight. 3-4-7 all at even strength, and 13/15 in the dot for good measure

an overager so can't get excited yet, but good to see him hovering around ~1.5 ppg which is what you'd hope for someone in that league.
He’s continuing to grow as a player and his recent permformance is encouraging. Maybe he’s a bit of a late bloomer. He will almost certainly get a chance with Utica next season.

Wow Baie-Comeau - I wonder if folks realize how remote this is ? How remote many of the Quebec Maritimes Junior cities are and how far from each other? We are talking some long bus trips through the Provinces in short winter days and who knows what weather. I would actually love to visit some of these towns up along the St. Lawrence. It’s a long way from any bright lights and big cities. A junior hockey tour would be a trip.

It's more than 5 hours north of Quebec City and about 3.5 hours to the nearest rival team, Saguenay. Next-closest team is Rimouski which involves a three-hour ferry. All of this in the deep far northern winter. Quite an adventure for a young kid from CZE.

The WHL has crazy geography too. Imagine being traded from Portland, Oregon to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

checking back in
  • intensity seemed a tick up from last viewing, particularly on the puck. quick first couple steps off the rush, multiple possessions where he was huffing it through defenses, went out of his way to finish checks. his game is still characterized by control and efficiency but i liked the added pace in this one
  • physical instincts were being applied more proactively on the puck as well. had been good about it when going for pucks or while shrugging off pressure, but in this game i thought he was using it as a tool (along with his vision/handling/pace) to actively open up space on the attack
  • didnt feel as involved offensively. dont think id say anything was going wrong per se, just seemed like most chances were off individual efforts. linemates werent finding him as much/he was playing a safer passing game not forcing plays. some of this could be deployment based, too, felt extra defensively-weighted today (lotta D zone starts and some big PKs they wanted him out for). did have a slick spinning backhand bass from behind the need to tee up his D for a goal, though truthfully...i thought it was kinda reckless lol
  • that said, i did really like his showings on the pk. kinda felt he was playing it like a devils kill in a way. strong positioning at the point, baited puck movement to a degree, quick to strike with a stickcheck/pounce on a loose puck and take it the other way. forced a breakaway in the early 3rd and found a teammate coming off the bench for an easy SHA
  • hes usually good about getting pucks from the corners/boards over to his linemates, but i thought today was a standout job with it. constantly was the guy to go deep and find them for chances in the high slot
again, one of the better players on the ice. im sure everyones used to me saying the whole...hes older, hes in the Q, he should be dominating, etc. thing, which is still very much true, but the little intensity bump was in fact something i said i was looking for, so i was encouraged by that. hopefully it continues to hold. i plan to check back in come playoff time

Hey, bring him on along with Lechance as well. The Devils haven't made a point of signing proven AHL talent for the Comets outside of year one when there were a lot of prospects here. Haven't been many prospects since and the outsiders brought in haven't been able to bring about a lot of success. So, maybe if they get enough guys in here, Parent or whomever gets named the Head Coach, can put together a successful outfit.

Parent's done a good job with what he inherited and what he's been left with up to now. The TDL moves didn't help him a lot, but we'll see. Not much more time left. Only 18 games left to go. They are 8 and potentially 6 point( 1 game in hand on both teams they are chasing.out of the playoffs.

melovsky vs squires round 1. will be the first time ive really watched them go head to head. both players getting a report today
  • involved in a number of rush chances to start. silky smooth in transition, every movement is so calculated and deliberate, can evade pressure quite easily. maybe a little too cute to start, thought he overpassed on some plays like an early odd man rush, but not as much of a complaint as the game went on
  • had an excellent play midway through the 1st: snatched a puck right as it was leaving the zone to keep play alive, quick give and go with his winger to shake pressure, skated straight at the net selling shot the whole way, and last second sent it backdoor for a one timer that his linemate fanned on. real nice work that shouldve been rewarded. had a couple more of these high ice strips/touches to maintain zone time as the game progressed
  • off puck proactive physicality stood out: in puck battles, to jam up forecheckers, setting a pick for his linemates, etc. again, wanna stress that when i call him physical its not to imply hes some big hitter or really oppressive to go up against, this is all about leveraging his frame to buy space and pressure turnovers
  • defensive support in general was quite good. made plays all over the zone: picked passes, tied up attackers, battled for pucks, pressured up high, etc. number of shifts where he was playing quite deep defensively, which i liked to see, and it was effective. he helped negate plays just outside the crease and also quickly got pucks going the other way a number of times. did think he went a little lax trying to cut off a forechecker driving the net on what eventually would be a reversed goal, but not the worst thing ive seen
  • thought he felt a little extra explosive in this one as well. won a number of puck races, got up in the rush quickly, backed defenders off in transition, was very quick to identify/cut off breakout lanes, etc. one play in particular stood out, which also showed how deceptive he can be: right around the halfwall, started basically stationary, out of nowhere he darts between two defenders and slips around another to drive the net for a near chance. very hard to react to that quick of a step (smooth handling, too). speed/pace gave CB problems
i say the same thing every game, solid overall performance with very little to complain about. he might not always pop off the page, but he consistently makes smart, efficient plays using every tool he has at his disposal. the off puck skating and deep zone defensive support in particular stood out today (the carries in transition, too, but they're always great). he is the ultimate two-way, puck moving center. im very eager to see how this player translates to the ahl level

Bizarre we didnt give him a fully entry level deal. Are we that close to the contracts limit?
Yeah - I'm disappointed on this. Not that I think Fitz should be handing these out left and right, but that he's still enough of a question mark that he only deserved a 1 year "show me" AHL deal.

Hopefully he impresses and earns the NHL deal.

Doesn't appear the Devils are really high on this kid. Don't want to chance an ELC on him?

Mikael Diotte came out of the QMJHL after the 2023-24 season as an undrafted RD. He was signed to a 3-yr. NHL ELC paying him $82.5K in the AHL. This was year 1 of his ELC. He started the season in Utica and looked like a duck out of water. After 5 games he was -4 and sent to ECHL Adirondack where he suffered a season ending injury after only 2 games. I believe that year will slide, YES? He just turned 22 on April 10.

Cam Squires was a 2023 NJ round 4 draft selection. This past season Cam Squires put up 75 Pts in the same QMJHL and he was signed to a 3-yr NHL ELC. He just turned 20 on April, 20.

Matyas Melovsky was a 2024 NJ round 6 draft selection. Putting things in comparison Melovsky also played in the QMJHL. This past season, '24-25, he put up 83Pts. He will turne 21 on May, 25. So Matyas is 1 year older and thus played an overage season in Jrs. He is also a CENTER.

The Devils are desperately at a shortage in the middle. Unless Fitz has a rabbit inj his hat, he needs to be signing a number of centers. He has no more in the well.

He brought in Shane Lachance who will turn 22 on August, 30. He was said to be a Center, but from all print info I read he is listed as either a Forward or LW. He played LW in both of his games with the Comets in their last 2 games. He got a 2-yr NHL ELC. His numbers don't knock you out, but for Fitz 6"5"/218 is a good start. He is also part of the Devils' nepotism trail which so far has netted them 0. I liked what I saw in a very small sample, but he has a long way to go to become NHL material.

I guess what I am saaying is that based upon the facts Matyas was just as deserving of an ELC as the other 3. I don't care if he was an overage JR. Lachance is the oldest one of the 4 and 30 points is not something that makes one go, "Wow!"

The upcoming season will give us a chance to compare all of these guys. I will take a chance and say that Diotte will start out in Adirondack once again. He has some catching up top do before he is suddenly AHL ready. Missing an entire season when he wasn't ready to begin with will have him starting over again.

Squires, Lachance, and Melovsky will give us here in Utica the opportunity to watch some forward prospects that might have some NHL promise. There haven't been any since 2021-22.

Casey, Nemec, Vilen, and Misyul were promising D-prospects.
Misyul might be done.
Vilen has another ELC season and ended up leading the team in assists with 23. Foote and Schmelzer were close 2nds with 21 each. He also was one of the few Comets with a + finish even if it was only +2, LOL.
Nemec is an enigma. He has loads of talent that he allows to cloud his judgemment and override his on ice decision making.
Casey has talent/skills coming out his ass. If given a chance to grow into them and acclimate 100% to the pro game , he is going to become good one.. Hopefully Fitz doesn't panic and trade him away for some quick fix.

Anyway, that's it fo now. We can't make any real judgements until time providess us with some true outcomes, not just hypothetical guessing.

Hopefully they add Hameenaho as well. He seems pretty promising.

No, the contracts limit probably has nothing to do with it - you really only start to reach the contracts limit if you're signing guys all over the place or have players on LTIR or whatever.

If Melovsky signs his ELC this year, he has 3 years of waiver ineligibility, if he signs it next year, he also has 3 years of waiver ineligibility, so this gives him another pro year without having to risk him on waivers. It also obviously gives the Devils an out if he isn't any good next season. It looks like Melovsky would re-enter the draft if he wasn't signed to a subsequent deal, which is odd but it appears that's how it works.

won the guy carbonneau trophy for best defensive forward in the Q. only a major junior award at the end of the day, but a nice recognition for his season as BCD's workhorse centerman. should note he was also T-7th in league scoring and 3rd in pt/gp, so very involved on both sides of the puck, as was consistent in the viewings i had. will be turning 21yo shortly so its all still about scaling at this point, but i dont think we couldve asked for a better overage season from him

I'm still perplexed about the AHL signing. Does this mean that someone else could sign him to an NHL contract ?
