Has 5yrs left at $4.29M.

He’s still young (turned 25 in March), but is currently stuck behind Power, and Byram and possibly even Dahlin on the left side (depending on where they play Dahlin).

What could Buffalo get for him? Or what would it take to move him?

Would a team like Chicago or San Jose be willing to take a shot at his upside?

Chicago and San Jose both have around 5 left handed D. They won't be interested, I think.

Some teams like Pittsburgh and Islanders that would possibly be interested already have a left-handed defense-first guy on a long term contract underperforming. I doubt they would want 2 of those on one blueline.

A lot of teams, probably most, have 5 year plans regarding their LD position. Between guys on the roster that they have now and want to keep long-term and then prospect they've drafted coming up, many teams are gonna be reluctant to take on a 5 year guy who is struggling.

You could maybe go with Seattle? Samuelsson + forward for Oleksiak and one of Burakovsky / Grubauer.

Oleksiak is decent, but the other Seattle players are seriously underperforming their contract. You only have 2 years of term to manage though as opposed to 5 with Samuelsson. You could maybe see how year 1 goes and then decide if keeping the player for year 2 or waiving them for AHL or doing a buyout is the smartest direction to go. With Grubauer specifically, waivers or buyout would happen because Levi is waiver eligible next summer.

It would be cool to see Oleksiak work out nicely on Buffalo, and Burakovsky or Grubauer play well enough that they aren't buyout worthy.

If the plan is to move him and use the cap savings to actually improve the team then I absolutely could get behind that. That said his season went so poorly I don't expect much of a return.

He is teetering on negative value because of his injuries and over the last few years lost his snarl. He is a candidate that could blossom under any defensive structure. Carolina feels like a good landing spot.

If he's teetering on negative value, they might be smart to just buy him out as it's still a 1/3 buyout for him this season and would only have a penalty of ~715k

A few years ago that contract looked like a steal. His injuries have really derailed that. Hopefully he can turn it around

I wonder if injuries have him shook- you don’t wanna miss more time so you don’t engage in the same way, you overthink, and you don’t play well as a result.

That’s me being generous- there were multiple times last year he brought zero fight to a scrum he needed to fight in.

Definitely a case where if we can just swap him for a 5th, or your team’s problem child- fine. Wish him luck, honestly, injuries suck.

yes thats smart but the just take him off our hands for free is step 1....
Honestly, I'd be willing. We're 3-4 years from competing IMO, so by then he'd be in a range to buyout again without it costing much.

Flames also have regularly been of being one of the least injured teams in the league, so I wonder if our off-ice staff might be able to help him stay healthier... we also have a team shrink if the injuries have him playing scared, something I'm not sure you guys have since it's something Pegula may no be willing to pay for considering the things Sabres fans have said about him.

I think he could easily be shipped to Pitt if needed. Their defense is old, and he could be a guy that comes in and gets a chance to blossom. Dont think he would have negative value, but it may be a small return - something like a 4th round pick
If we didn't have Ryan Graves, I'd be fine with this.
I might be fine with it, anyway. The new coach might be able to get something out of Graves, and Samuelsson as well.

I think last year he was playing not at 100%like the injury was upper body or or shoulder which you use in boards/ scrums
