Player Discussion Mattias Samuelsson, LHD, Hurt Again

or Colin Miller. If they get a 2nd round pick offer early, they should take it.

Thinking about handedness and role. Hagg has surprised me - again, the style they play with having the forwards buying into being back to provide support (four guys below the dots) and also quicker breakout options has resolved some of his issues that we saw in Philly. Samuelsson provides that sort of snarly, stout d-zone play on LD.

You'll see Johnson also as Adams isn't going to skrimp and risk him returning to school for his senior year by not giving him any NHL games to burn an ELC year
It's funny because I remember listening to Kevyn Adams being interviewed by Brian Koziol and Paul Hamilton before the Toronto game and when they were discussing prospects Adams didn't seem as enthusiastic about Johnson has he did about the rest of the prospect pool... Not saying I want this but with the emergence of Bryson, I can see them maybe swopping Johnson for RHD prospect or in some other package. We have a ton of young LHD and almost zero RHD prospects.

Please, for the love of God, play Samuelsson today and sit Butcher.

I thought Samuelsson played quite well today ? Hopefully he stays up if things are not too dire and get a solid 5-10 or more games in.
They looked like they were playing real defense with Samuelsson in the lineup, getting in the lanes and blocking shots last night.

Butcher has been a meh addition. However, when you take a rental with a draft pick, it could be worse. With all the COVID ongoing he's had some useful games. I'd rather see Samuelsson as well, if he's going to get consistent minutes. Otherwise, he was better off staying in the AHL.

Put him on the the third pairing and PKing. At this point- playing those minutes at NHL speed is better for his development than top pairing minutes in the AHL. With COVID and the way injuries are racking up - I can see him getting spot checks in the top-4 as well.

Makes perfect sense to me.

I was a little distracted during the game so I was only watching on and off but I thought he looked pretty solid the times I did see him.

I kept thinking it was strange watching Samson Reinhart play for the Sabres again.

I thought he played steady in his 2022 debut vs. DET, just like he did last season. Glad to see he is getting the chance again after injury.

Used his size effectively. Didn't panic, eating the puck along the boards instead of making a hope-this-works play. Made some crisp tape-to-tape passes. Played 22 minutes!

Really quite impressed with his game tonight.

Looks so much more reliable defensively than most of the other d-men on the team. Out there in crunch time in a one-goal game. No need for him to go down again, he makes this Sabres defense group better right now.
