what do you think the value for him is!?
Hard to say, but he hasn't been good lately, the growl is gone and there are more mistakes, injuries are plaguing him. I would try to trade him and give Johnson a chance, and Novikov is not far away. Or sign a veteran LD for the third pair.

There are several GMs who would give something of value for a big-bodied young defenseman signed long term.

I’d dangle him for Crouse who is also struggling.
The sad thing is that this is likely true about GMs... that said, I think he only has real value with salary retention which I doubt this franchise does. Ultimately, only elite defensive defenders get paid... and he is paid like some of the best. He did show promise early, but his current form is yikes.

Paid like one of the best?... he gets paid 4 mill a year... this is bottom pairing money nowadays going forward.

He’s paid like a #4, which some GM out there will think he still can be.

Well I think there are players who are getting paid less and are more effective on the third pair or even in the top 4. It's not that Samuelsson's salary is an issue right now, but if we want to build a playoff team we're going to need the cap and Samuelsson's role is questionable right now, plus Johnson and Novikov will be catch up him and they'll need a chance too.

$4M for a 3rd pairing defenseman is going to be VERY common place very very soon.

Samuelssons cap hit is a literal non issue.

And you mention Johnson or Novikov catching up....if they do, that's a good problem to have.

I'm still holding onto Samuelsson....he's one of those types that should excel in the playoffs if we ever get there. And there's PLENTY of examples of defensemen like him that just take longer to "get it"

Well, I don't agree here, I would like to give Johnson and Novikov a chance, and maybe even sign a good vet for the locker room for a year like Cole or Dumoulin. I'm just tired of Samuelsson's constant injuries and his regression.

And the instant we get rid of him......we start looking for THE EXACT SAME THING WE HAD. Like Eichel. Or Reinhart. Or Mitts. Or Carrier. Or Borgen. Or Hagel. Or Ullmark. Or....jeebus I can go on.

Okay, let's save things as they are and keep losing, good plan. And I don't understand how your list of players is connected with Samuelsson.

He is strictly a defensive defenseman making $4.3 (he has 5 points in 26 games this year, and 34 over 176 in his career - the charts don't paint a better picture)... Tanev just signed for $4.5, and Vlasic for $4.6.

Is my comment mixed neatly with some hyperbole, sure it is, but why pay the guy like this when he had not proven anything, knowing full well, you are not paying him big even if he turns out to be really good (that profile just does not get paid big).

In any case, I think the contract makes him a tricky move. But like @My Cozen Dylan mentioned, GMs value big bodied D-men. Go Sabres!

I expect that when he finally departs, he’s going to turn into the guy that we saw flashes of early. It’s the way. Think of Monty going to Florida. That’s what’s gonna happen and people are going to this point and laugh. Not that that absolves him from being shitty and hurting himself in the most random fashion or that he’s currently overpaid and could be bought out this summer or next. Just my expectation is that when he leaves he’s gonna turn back into the stopper we once saw.

I think we would start looking for the exact same thing we had hoped Samuelsson would grow into. The contract was a bet that he would be a great 2nd pair defensive defenseman, or top pair with Dahlin.

That never really came to fruition. I personally would buy him out while he’s still at the cheaper buyout level due to age.

Or he won't, what's his role for us long term? What's the role of a guy like Novikov or Johnson who won't get a chance and could also turn into the next Faber, Marino, Kesselring etc somewhere else when we trade them. Let him play well and then he can stay, I haven't seen that from him in a long time. Samuelsson and Clifton were a terrible pairing, then replacing Clifton with someone else who can move the puck somehow.

I don’t know if he’ll ever get on track to be what he’s capable of. But 4mil for a good top 4 defense dman is low. It will be really low as we move along and the cap keeps jumping up.
