Player Discussion Mattias Ekholm

Interesting that Ekholms career shooting % is 5.4%.

Since being with the Oilers its 10.7%.
No biggy, even if we adjust his shooting percentage/PDO etc to his career averages he'd still be on pace for something like 40 points and +40 with the team so far lol.

While the other guys are having a shower after the game Ekholm cleans up his own way...

I hear you.

I cant imagine that there is an Oilers fan anywhere that isnt stoked about Ekholm being an Oiler.
He has been a difference maker.

The thing that amazes me is that Ekholm is all over the ice. He seems to process the game at a very high level and rarely gets caught out of position despite the fact that he can show up anywhere. The McDavid goal against the Ducks had him screening the goalie.
The Viking does it all apparently....and does it well.

Might be one of the rare acquisitions that I haven't heard much if any complaints. Maybe the original day or two, but since then it's been radio silence when it comes to the complaints.

Then again I think the people that would've complained never liked the Schaefer pick anyway so they didn't know what to say.

Small sample size, but I do think part of that is due to usage.

In Nashville, Ekholm was the go-to shutdown defenceman, and the Josi pairing was the main offensive one. Here, Nurse and Ceci have remainee
For sure its a small sample size and likely to shift quite a bit after 30-40 games,
I found it interesting though.

Fair point that Ekholm is being utilized in a different way here than he was in Nashville and no doubt the trade has rejuvenated him as well.

He processes the game well but the thing that stands out to me is how poised he is. He doesnt make very bad decisions or force plays. Also just seems like he slows down time and then makes the correct play.

Hes not perfect (no dman is) but he really limits chances against due to his own play.

I agree.
I think that he has had the most impact of any dman since Pronger.

I remember not liking this trade when it was made and feeling it was an overpay. This is why I'm a fan of sports - because clearly I am a terrible judge of anything hockey related and being a fan allows me to criticize whilst having no real accountability for my opinions.

I dunno about "usage" necessarily but a big part of it is probably just that Edmonton's forwards create a lot of good chances for the defensemen that he definitely wasn't seeing in Nashville.

When you're on the ice with McDavid and/or Draisaitl I think we can safely just add a few % to whatever somebody's average is.

You know you've made a good trade when other fan bases and outside media are questioning why their team didnt trade for Ekholm.
It's like the Kane pickup last year as well.

We can rip on Holland all we want, and there have been mistakes... but he has absolutely stuck gold on his last 2 years of in-season acquisitions.

He's signed for three more years as well. Sometimes forget he's not a rental as it just seems like too good to be true.

See him aging well, Giordano/Burns style.
I don't see him aging like that, I see him aging like Pronger. He's a better player in Edmonton than he was is Nashville, he might still get better.

Pretty sure it's Ulanov

2 goals, Oilers win 5-4 over the Flames, right before the Christmas break.

I sorta remember this stretch, the Oilers went red hot into Christmas that year being no.1 in the division I think (?) or something like that, and it was like a lot of heat around Edmonton about getting a goalie, because they were doing it with bad goaltending (3rd stringer Mike Morrison was getting starts at that point).

So the whole thing was "Lowe needs to get a goalie now!!!! Team is legit otherwise!". Lots of people at that stage I believe wanted Marty Biron from Buffalo badly as Buffalo had two good goalies.
The three headed beast.

I hope Ekholm proves more durable than Pronger. Pronger’s career was ostensibly done by the time he was 33.
