...or we could stay on topic and you could read what I wrote. I said Matthews could have brought more and the US might have won uf he had. Of course, if others around him brought more they would have won also. You can post 10,000 more words and it doesn’t change the score sheet in the GMG or tournament overall. No excuses can overcome the narrative that Matthews has made for himself- he disappears in the biggest games. As supposedly one of the best in the world, that’s a dagger in both his legacy and current status. Playing a strong “possession game” means zilch. “Expanded stats” mean zilch. The only bias is the one being shown in posts like this.
I guess this answers the question though of what it would take for Leafs fans to criticize one of their own: nothing. Absolutely nothing can shake the unwavering belief that all their players are the best and every other fan is out of touch, even as they watch one of their own abandon the best offensive player of his generation in the slot to chase shadows while himself failing to bag just one goal. It is truly wild.

Matthew was PPG, he shut down and outplayed McDavid until eventually there was a breakdown including Matthews, but not only him and the best player in the world was found open by one of the best playmakers in the world and Hellebuyck I did not do what Binnington did.
What I am saying is that there is lots of blame to go around for the US and it is disproportionately being pointed at the Toronto Maple Leaf.
What about Eichel? Fox? The Tkachuk brothers filling the Canadian locker room bulletin board with motivational material? How about the fact that you go outgoalied? How about a poorly constructed line up? How about questionable character in Miller and Kreider, possibly the Canucks?
Yes, if Matthews played a little bit better and caught a break or two in OT and assisted on or scored ALL of the US goals then maybe they win. I see a big difference between that basement and blaming him or saying he disappeared.
I was shocked that Eichel didn't score tooGermany wasn't in the 4 nations so no surprise the best goal scorer had no goals.
Sigh...I don't think I ever said he scored goals in this tournament. I simply said he was much better than most on here are giving him credit for and that is obviously an anti-Leaf bias for most.I went back and checked, but sadly none of these excuses added a goal to Matthews’ tally for the tournament. Maybe if you post some more it will though?
a Freudian slip for the ages…When the expanded stats are released, we will see that Sullivan leaned heavily on Matthews in the Golf Medal game and specifically in OT. We will also see that Matthews played a strong possession game, assisted on both goals, and had numerous chances, probably more than anyone else on the US. I choose not to see that as what "he didn't do" which pretty much everyone else on his team didn't do also. Maybe if more players around him showed up and delivered it would be all about Matthews not doing enough. If the "stars" around him did even a little bit of their jobs better Matthews is the captain hoisting that Trophy.
Yeah, that's pretty awesome and I won't even go back and edit it. Some things deserve to live ona Freudian slip for the ages…

The most impactful US forward by far in the final game, despite playing injured.
In Toronto he is. Any game he doesn't score leafers will tell ya "he's playing injured"Alot of the top players play w/o being 100%. 82 games they are targeted causing this. Mathews ain't different.
Until the bulk of this board learns to actually understand what they are watching, evidence contrary to the contrived narrative will just be dismissed.
Matthew’s had a good tournament despite being injured, but the narrative the board will carry is “….but 0 goals.”
They should strip him of his Rocket trophies and give them to the delicate flower that scored the OT goal against Sweden. This snapshot in time obviously overshadows seasons of work by Matthews.
It's more than just the board talking about the goose egg he laid.Until the bulk of this board learns to actually understand what they are watching, evidence contrary to the contrived narrative will just be dismissed.

For sure Matthews is getting a not tough enough label. Maybe that’s just this new generation of star players? In Toronto he is. Any game he doesn't score leafs will tell "he's playing injured"
Messier , Yzerman , Bossy , Mario , Eichel, etc played half their career injured. Or more.
Matthews had 50 in 50 games? Which season did he do that?
So not 50 in the first 50 games. His first 60 goal season he had a 51 game stretch with 51 goals.

While Tkachuk, Mackinnon , McDavid, Bennet, Guentzal, Grandlund, Sanderson, Larkin, Stone, Marchand, Barkov, did show up and score big goalsI’ll wade back into the fray with some more comments I thought about. I don’t think Matthews had a bad overall tournament just because he didn’t score. He’s a goal scorer and you want to see your goal scorers score goals, but that doesn’t mean you can’t contribute in other ways.
I will also say that while his overall performance was reasonably good, that you don’t win very many championships by being just “reasonably good.” You’re going to need to elevate your performance in key moments for that kind of success. That’s something he didn’t quite do.
Are you referring to his 2 assist on the U.S.’s 2 goals in the final game “goose egg”, or his 3 points in 3 games “goose egg”? Thank you for reinforcing my point. It's more than just the board talking about the goose egg he laid.
He was getting robbed in OT. Shot no problem. Just got stopped. Must be the injury. LOL
I feel like people have been saying he has had a bad wrist for ages. He's playing injured and will be playing injured for Toronto in the playoffs as well.
We all know it's his wrist.
I just think its cause there's been a lack of updates. like why was he in Germany? something is bothering him for sure and I think it started before he scored 69th last season. I think he did something that never healed properly in his search for 70I feel like people have been saying he has had a bad wrist for ages.
Did I stutter? Read the title of the thread you are on. Zero goals in games the three games he played first line and powerplay. 0-0-0.Are you referring to his 2 assist on the U.S.’s 2 goals in the final game “goose egg”, or his 3 points in 3 games “goose egg”? Thank you for reinforcing my point.
yea, it was a nothing game after all.Meh. Probably would've had 2 against Sweden.
No. Not in the first 50 games of the season. So not 50 in the first 50 games.
