Regular season

Matthews - 1.16ppg, 0.64 goals per game

Rantanen - 1.08 ppg, 0.45 goals per game

- Difference in ppg is basically Rantanen's first seasons, when he was under 0.5ppg while AM came in the league flying.

Playoffs

Matthews - 0.88ppg in 67 games, 0.38 gpg

Rantanen - 1.28 ppg in 94 games, 0.46 gpg

Before the playoffs no one was even thinking this right?

In a throw everyone in the pool for a one year salary doesn't matter build all 32 teams from scratch the majority of NHL GMs and coaches would be picking Matthews but it's AM and a Leafs player during the playoffs so we get summertime type of threads like this that don't make much sense.

But this is HF Boards and many like to do this as un serious people.

You mean every year before the playoffs, right? It's their 9th season going already and Mikko has outplayed AM on every single playoffs.

Uninjured Mattews is better. And he's a center that is responsible defensively.

Question is : Is the uninjured Mattews a thing of the past? His lingering wrist injury doesn't seem to heal well.

Frankly who cares?

Switch AM and Rants from Avs to Leafs would there be a huge difference?

I'll take the repeatable regular season over a more team specific situation.

Let's put it this way do how many seasons in the last 5 was Rants better than AM, maybe one off season low point one?

Like I said I've always loves Rants and still do but this isn't a serious question.

What is so team specific here? How are playoffs not repeatable if neither player has basically never missed them(Expect Rants on his 1st season)? Rantanen has been in 2 teams and outplayed AM in both of those in playoffs very clearly. While Toronto and Avalanche are known as some of the most offense-minded teams, Dallas has more defensive approach.

Switch career playoffs 1.28ppg player to a 0.88ppg player? I would say that is a huge difference.

Switch AM and Rantanen this playoffs? i would say Dallas would have been out after 1st round and Toronto would be in conference finals already.

It doesn't work like that and frankly you are an experienced enough poster to know this...or at least I thought so.

Matthews simply doesn't bring what you need. Rantanen has become a bit overrated due to his recent hot streak, but he definitely wins this poll.

I don't know what is not working like that. I would say with having this large sample size, including Rantanen performing on 2 teams, things are working exactly how these stats are saying.

I guess the difference here is what we value. I value constant generational playoff performances, you value elite goal-scoring seasons in regular season every now and then, no matter if it carries to a post-season.

Why would you pick the worse player for the playoffs? That sounds strange.
His game is more conductive for the playoffs. Matthews doesn’t seem to play well when slot shots are blocked off, when there’s less space and more physicality. Marner is a top 20 player, but I would pick 30 or so players ahead of him for the playoffs.

I love Rants as a player but these types of polls and discussions are just getting ridiculous.

No one is forcing you to click on the thread...

It's not a bad one at all. Matthews puts up better numbers during the regular season and Rantanen puts up better numbers in the playoffs.

The goal is to win the cup, so give me a playoff performer. It's not like Rantanen doesn't put up lots of points in the regular season either.

Matthews is a very talented goal scorer, just struggles when the pressure is on. Hopefully he gets over that

Yeah I understand this, but it just sounds weird to say he is a better player, if his style does not work when it is against the best teams when the teams care most about winning the games. At least to me, showing up or improving in playoffs is important part of players skill level. But I see regular seasons more as a preparing for the playoffs.

Like Aho said recently, he does not even put all in in the regular season to save some energy for the playoffs. In playoffs, everyone is trying their 110%.

Matthews for reg season, rantanen for playoffs overall tough to say I’d probably lean Matthews because he has an MVP but both on way to becoming hall of famers.
