Proposal: Matthews+ for McDavid

Matthews for EP40 + 15OA ++

Build around Nylander and Pettersson’s Swedish connection.
As a Leafs fan, I would try and do something around Matthews + Rielly for EP40 + Hronek + more pieces if possible. Rielly makes sense for Vancouver if Quinn Hughes ends up being moved, as he's also a left-handed puck-mover, and he's a hometown British Columbia guy. Leafs D with McCabe Tanev Hronek OEL Carlo Benoit lacks pack movement, but is otherwise very good-looking. Perhaps look at moving Benoit for a puck mover after.

Matthews gone. Rielly gone.
Keep Nylander, Tavares is a maybe, and I guess the common opinion is to let Marner walk.

You could also use the Marner money to sign somebody for 1 year and then let them walk next summer if you think McDavid will sign here. McDavid Pettersson down the middle. Pipe dream, I know.

I wouldn't give up anything for McDavid. I'd just hope to sign him as a UFA for free.
Why, precisely, do fans in Toronto think this is even a remote possibility?

I mean, MAYBE, if we're talking about a 35 year old McDavid who wants to play his last handful of years in front of his friends and family. But why would prime/peak McDavid want to sign in Toronto?

if McDavid becomes a UFA he may have interest in Toronto, you don't know anymore than I do either way if he doesnt wanna come here then he likely won't extend if Leafs traded for him. Id rather try to sign him as a UFA over potentially pay a kings ransom for a rental

The only way the Oilers would ever consider moving McDavid is if McDavid lets them know that he will not resign, and that he wants to go to Toronto (only).

The Leafs would never consider this trade unless McDavid told them he wants to sign long term in Toronto.

If Both those things were true, the Oilers would be crazy to not make that deal (even straight up), else, it would be McDavid as a self rental for one last kick at a Cup.

If the Leafs 'knew' he wanted/would sign with them they would just wait it out and have both, and just clear whatever it took to get him in.
