Proposal: Matthews+ for McDavid

This isn't a Leafs fan proposing this.

Anyways, from an Edmonton perspective, I don't know if the Leafs had full rights to the core four and offered them at 50% for McDavid, if Edmonton would do that.

Edmonton counter offers Kapanen/Brown/2nd for Knies.
So if McDavid says he wasn’t re-signing you wouldn’t take the core 4 for them? Interesting.

This only works for the Oilers if McDavid says he is never re-upping in Edmonton and he demands to be traded to the Leafs… even then, Leafs add.

This never works for McDavid or the Leafs because it would guarantee he would never win a Cup. How exactly would the Leafs build a contender with only McDavid, Nylander, no first round picks in the next 3 years, an aging D core and average goaltending?

McDavid, if he chooses to play in TO will leave Edmonton as a FA and sign there as a FA. He needs Matthews (or significant returning assets) there if he has any chance.

McDavid shows up in the playoffs. Matthews doesn’t. For that reason alone Edmonton doesn’t consider it. Then you factor in that Edmonton’s only compensation for downgrading is a 12,000 year old Chris Tanev and… nah. Not worth considering, even if McDavid wouldn’t sign.

So hypothetically the Oilers lose the best player on the planet . . . and to appease their fan base they acquire arguably the biggest playoff bust in the past 30 years?

Yeah. That doesn't make sense at all.

This simply isn't a realistic thing to be discussed. If Edmonton lose McDavid they pretty much have to rebuild at that point
Not necessarily. Draisaitl+X+Bouchard+Nuge/Hyman/Nurse/whatever is a good core and will make the playoffs every year but Matthews isn’t that guy, he’s just not. If Edmonton did decide to rebuild/retool with a hypothetical loss of McDavid they’d likely want younger pieces without the baggage Matthews carries.

It's Matthews + Knies + few first round picks.

Won't happen though. Matthews value is extremely low, he won't waive for Edmonton and McDavid is not going to want to play for Toronto. Not yet at least. If he's leaving, he's going to south and trying something different while he's still in his prime.
