Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is day-to-day with an upper-body injury and will not be available for Tuesday's game against the Boston Bruins.

Matthews played in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild, notching an assist in 22:12 minutes of ice time.

The 27-year-old has five goals and 11 points in 13 games this season. He led the NHL with 69 goals last season, posting 107 points in 81 games.

Matthews has appeared in all 82 games in a season just once in his career - as a rookie in 2016-17.

The first overall pick in the 2016 draft has 373 goals and 660 points in 575 career games. He is the league's highest-paid player this season, carrying a cap hit of $13.25 million in the first of a four-year extension signed in 2023.

The Maple Leafs are 6-5-2 this season and are third in the Atlantic Division. The Bruins are just behind them with a 6-6-1 record.

I had a feeling like they’d shut him down for a couple of days based on quality of play. Wonder what the injury is.

I can bet my life savings that ain't coming out

we still don't know what happened in last years playoffs apart from "head injury issues"

this injury is going to be kept more secret than a potential trade deal

I speculated they’d give him a couple of days off under the cover of injury after the Minnesota game.

Wouldn’t be totally surprised if it was a conditioning thing. I’d be curious to see if the PK responsibilities get scaled back and defensive zone faceoffs are managed when he returns.

Don’t like that it’s an injury coinciding with a Bruins game though. That gives me some flashbacks to the last series and we can all have our feelings on whatever happened there.

You 'speculated' that they would give him a couple days off under 'cover of injury' after the Minnesota game. ok.

Stephen can I just ask are you delusional lol?

Auston Matthews missing Bruins games with non-specified injuries after a poor stretch of games isn’t exactly uncharted territory.

You’re frustrated too. You can’t possibly be happy with what’s going on with this player with expectations and what the Leafs have invested in him.

Sorry still confused here Stephen. Are you saying you speculated the Leafs would give Matthews a couple days off to what, get himself together, and this under 'cover of injury'. Did you mean bench him or send him for conditioning stint?? Please elaborate.

It's weird how this comes out from nowhere. Can anyone pinpoint where he might have been hurt last game? Or anything from practice? Same thing with Willy from last season's playoffs. All of a sudden, he wasn't available to start the series. Weird stuff to be honest with you.

Here is the timeline:

Friday: Berube will say he's 100%, something small just bothering him

Sometime in March: Siegel releases an article talking about the lingering injury that has derailed his season

The PTSD is kicking in

Is this why his production is off this year?

In the playoffs he shot 5%.
This year he's shooting 8.9%
His regular is 12-18%.

In the playoffs half the time his shooting sucks, but not usually regular season.

Maybe it's coaching?

They’re going to give him the night off so he doesn’t have to play Boston, probably the next game too so he’ll come back with more energy and hopefully get back to a more productive run.

If they scale back his PK and defensive zone starts that will be a giveaway that he’s dealing with a conditioning issue.

Yeah I think it’s a conditioning issue. As you alluded to, it’s the defensive zone starts which he isn’t used to. I guess he doesn’t make enough to be in shape

I'm actually not frustrated at all. And I have Matthews in my fantasy team too. Still not frustrated.

As a long time Leafer, probably longer than you, I can recognize that a great player like Matthews who has set a precedent of being an elite scorer, will start scoring again, and I can recognize that it's too early into a new season with a new coach and new system to be judging too harshly at this time.

This is the difference between you and I. My frustrations will be when and if we lose in the playoffs or how we look heading into the playoffs. Not now.

Wrist issues again.... at least that's my guess. He seems to have chronic wrist issues, and we've seen that affect his shooting in the past.
