Just once you want to see these key players rise to the occasion and show some growth in key moments, high pressure situations, additional responsibilities. Like I’m a 10 year veteran now, I’ve learned all the lessons and let’s take it to another level. But it’s always this uncomfortable squirming about and shrinking from the moment. Slow adjustment, need more time etc.
Can’t wait for the season ending presser where Shanahan once agin makes excuses for running it back to infinity and beyond……….

He looked braindead at the end of the last game, slick pass to Willy notwithstanding.

I'm not questioning his heart or whatever but for once I'd like our top players to take responsibility and not play through lingering injuries in what should be a fairly meaningless regular season.

He has become the toughest guy on the ice. I find it strange that players the should be harder the play against have become pacifists. This team still is divided in 2 parts.

guy hasn't played a full season since his rookie year, most of them being for Keefe's system which isn't exactly physically demanding relatively speaking.

Leafs Home Board
Because of Matthews ridiculous contract $13.25 mil every time he can't go and he is replaced with a player making near league minimum like say Nic Robertson $875k then Leafs will be playing over $12 mil below the league ceiling for this game.

Because of the way he impacts the Leafs salary cap and team they ice, put the Leafs at a huge disadvantage so when he misses time it better be he is injured, and not just a pain threshold he is unwilling to play through because his contract is guaranteed whether he plays of not.

Even a Matthews at 50% health at 13.5 mil/2= $6.75 mil essential cap hit >>> league min or AHL call up.

I would usually hate on Matthews but hes gotten enough of that which is always nice to see

I'll predict he goes 1.6ppg the next 10 games hes back with 12Gs and 4As and team's core guys offense takes off bringing everyone back to thinking this is the year

Rest well captain

He had a wrist injury and maybe it flared up again.
If my old man’s memory is correct ..I think he had surgery on it

James Duthie: No Auston Matthews for the Toronto Maple Leafs against Boston. It doesn't sound too serious, CJ, but likely to extend for a least a few days?

Chris Johnston: Yeah, I think certainly with the Leafs having back-to-backs [on] Friday and Saturday, that in addition to missing Tuesday's game against Boston, wouldn't be surprising to see Auston Matthews miss a little bit more time. You're right when you say there's not a lot of concern, I don't get the sense there's any big picture alarms going off here. And really how we got here, is Auston Matthews missed a little bit of time during training camp and I believe he's been managing this, to some degree, throughout the season, hasn't been 100 per cent. Obviously, wanted to get off to a good start during the year. He's been pushing through it, but after a busy week, last week three games in four days, over the weekend a decision was made to just shut him down, give his body a little bit of time to rest here. I think we'll see him sooner than later, but will probably miss more than the one game.

So basically they gave him the week off to recover from whatever and signalling the week off isn't the same as week to week.

I speculated they’d give him a couple of days off under the cover of injury after the Minnesota game.

Wouldn’t be totally surprised if it was a conditioning thing. I’d be curious to see if the PK responsibilities get scaled back and defensive zone faceoffs are managed when he returns.

Don’t like that it’s an injury coinciding with a Bruins game though. That gives me some flashbacks to the last series and we can all have our feelings on whatever happened there.

I said when he signed the deal that he was risking more than you'd think. The way it's been going, he could be taking some massive reputational damage the way he consistently under delivers in the playoffs.

Anyway the way this season has gone, I wouldn't be surprised if they announced a mystery injury and took him out for a couple of weeks. The guy looks cooked.

In the post game thread someone posted the records without Matthews, Nylander, Marner, MO and it stood out to me how many games an NHL player misses in his career. Bergeron, for example, missed 150+ games.

Nobody here knows the secret health issue that sometimes afflicts AM? He had to take time off during the Boston series as well and Keefe its something that affects him sometime.

I have no idea but was thinking maybe like a Crohn's disease or something? Its a bit weird
