Confirmed with Link: Matthew Robertson signed 2 Years

inconsequential.

There is more thought put into it on a single page of this thread, compared to the “decision makers” - it’s a box to check.

I have a question. 🤚

This is like the fifth time you've described your ideal defenseman as "big and tall and lanky."

You cannot be both big and tall and tall and lanky.

What do you think lanky means?

Yes, these folks are lanky.

Manute Bol was listed at 7'7", 201 pounds.

Chuck Nevitt was listed at 7'5", 216 pounds.

A strong gust of wind would instantly end both of them, so in a sense, I don't know if I'd go "big" as a descriptor here.

The bigger you are, the less lanky you are.
My thinking was that once you cross the 7'5" threshold, you become "big and lanky," regardless of your weight. This is obviously very scientific and should probably be documented somewhere.

I think the reason the Rangers resigned him is that the team plans to go with Mackey, Dorington and Robertson as the left defensemen in Hartford. I don't consider him a serious candidate for the Rangers. He just consistently makes bad defensive reads and his offense is just average even at an AHL level. The size and skating are good but his other qualities bring him down.

When I see mock drafts showing the Rangers might take Jackson Smith whose flaw seems to be questionable hockey sense I can't help seeing another Matthew Robertson.
I don't necessarily disagree but they could find quality AHL veterans on the same kind of contract or even AHL deals if they wanted to. The only reason to sign Robertson specifically was if they liked him.

He also was not a Drury pick so there's not going to be any attachment to him. I really believe they think there's still something there.

EDIT: What I mean is like Mackey and Fitzgerald, they basically signed the same deal as Robertson. They both had $450k minors salaries in year one, but the same NHL salary, and Mackey's was actually two-way both years. Or someone like Hillman will take an AHL deal. Those guys were all better and more accomplished when signed.

There's essentially no pro LHD depth in the organization right now, so this was kind of necessary for both overall depth and putting forth a good product in HFD. It would be nice if they could turn him into an NHL player because the returns on the 2019 draft are looking pretty brutal
No young pro d as well, like when the Rangers had Schneider and Lundkvist. that is another organizational issue. Rangers should try to sign the next Pionk type of UDFA and actually keep him.

He’s not a serious NHL player.
What do you mean by "serious" NHL player? Serious like Gustav Forsling? Serious like Ryan Lindgren? Or Nick Holden? I'm gonna trust the Hartford thread regulars on this one. I don't know what serious means but Robertson has the capability to play in the NHL. He's still young and can learn and grow. He'll be replacing Zac Jones as our 7D and will get opportunities to really contribute come injury when he'll have the chance to impress Sully and overtake someone on the depth chart.

Matthew Robertson--thought he did alright in the Rangers final two games this year. He didn't look any worse than Vaakanainen or Soucy anyway. He led the Pack's D in scoring. Big guy who moves well. Will he make the Rangers out of training camp? I wouldn't bet on it but I think he's finally an option now. For those unhappy with his progress keep in mind that often defensemen need more development time than forwards.

Most of the Hartford regular viewers have been really down on him fwiw.

Playing “well” in those late games is like the equivalent of hitting .500 in spring training. Both Tampa and Florida were resting guys and the regulars who played were trying not to get hurt. These is nothing substantial to pull from that before even getting to it being a 2 game sample size.

LMAO that reminded me of last year when someone was trying to gas up Brennan Othmanns “frame” and you shut it down

I wouldn't mind giving him a shot at the 3LD depending on what they are attempting to do. And based on what Seravelli is saying that 12-15 teams have called about Miller, he may just find his way in their lineup opening night.

Are we resetting things this season? The roster is not the same from the ECF runs and not close. If the big move was to take Kreider out and run most of this back, he can't be the 3LD plan. Maybe he just runs with the job, that's fine, but you'd need a veteran LHD for the 3rd pairing going into the season.

If it's moving Panarin out and going much younger, then having him be the 3LD by default wouldn't bother me. You would be white flagging the next season without another big piece coming back.

i think he has a better shot being a career ahler than a bottom pair dman in the NHL, but i’m not going to be upset over this. Lets see whats happens.

I don't know if Robertson will suck or not at the NHL level. 2 games wasn't enough to make an assessment like many have pointed out.

But I also know I don't know why it took so long to give him a look. A lot of players, especially defenseman, can play at an equal, or greater, level when the talent around them is better and the coaching is better. Practices are better. Workouts are better. It helped Jones. It really should never be understated how much better a competent player can look once they are surrounded by competent players.

Robertson can skate, he has good size, he isn't dumb and he engages. A lot of issues in the AHL spawned from trying to be all over the ice too much cause, frankly, his partners were always very bad and the team was very young and a bit of a mess.

And, he had his best season to date this year. Best season by far. Give the kid a shot. The worst that happens is he cant cut it. The best is you find a proper LHD that can push the attacking team out and get the puck back and up to the forward.

Oh the horror! That's not how the Rangers do things! We overpay for free agents and trades, never giving our drafted players a shot only to watch them go somewhere else and thrive!

That's a little hyperbolic, but can you really argue there is someone clearly better that really needs the time? Haha

There are defensemen around the NHL who never really made it until they were around 24, 25, 26. It's not that unusual. What it kind of does say though is if he can make it at that age he's not likely going to be a top 4. We kind of see the same thing going on also though with late blooming D coming over from Europe around about the same age group.

I don't think that Robertson is any kind of a lock for a job. He's going to have to earn it. It's a new coaching staff and I suspect this staff will come to camp with an open mind so Matthew if he plays well will give himself a chance. I think signing for two years instead of one might also be a confidence boost for him but again he's going to have to beat out his competition. One guy he might have to beat out is Zac Jones. Zac has played well at times but I've never really been a fan. I think he's too small and not quite skilled enough for a player on a better NHL team. Among other of our problems last year I think our D was too small and too soft. It was not the kind of D you could win a Cup with. Just to say that means it needs to be fixed......along with some other shit.
