Confirmed with Link: Matthew Robertson signed 2 Years

So he'll start making some pretty significant money AHL or NHL next year, which is good for him. 800k is a big step up from AHL salaries. Worse careers out there than being a well respected AHL veteran who gets the occasional call due to injuries.

I think they do the guarantee so he doesn’t get claimed off waivers

There's essentially no pro LHD depth in the organization right now, so this was kind of necessary for both overall depth and putting forth a good product in HFD. It would be nice if they could turn him into an NHL player because the returns on the 2019 draft are looking pretty brutal

He’s not a serious NHL player.
honestly hard to tell, his AHL stuff never looked great but the few games at the end of the season he didn't look out of place...I tend to think guys like him if they keep things simple can perform far better than if they are out there trying to do it all, and sometimes in the AHL you get guys trying to do it all because they're hoping to make a bigger impact and get called up.

I think he'll get a shot in camp, he looks like he has the physical tools and skills, but a couple of games is never a full prediction either. But I'd suspect the Rangers saw something in him they liked or they would have let him walk.

This guy would be lifting the Cup as a reliable 5/6 Dman if he was in Florida.

Let's fight.

I don’t think so. He’s barely been able to stay afloat in the AHL.

I’m cool with giving him a run to grab a bottom pair spot but it’s not likely to happen.

You’re going to need a team full of HFDocs after I’m through with you.

Might as well. Robertson has size and a good skill package. He's had issues putting everything together but we're not going to win a Cup with a smallish defense. I think that should be obvious by now. If he can make the team and be a positive.....great. He could also end up in Hartford again. This year we'll see if he can make the step.

Robertson is an interesting one because form the times I've seen him, his positive skating has led to him being out of position. It's not that he is bad, it's that he over commits at times. That's something that can be coached whereas the physical attributes he has (size, strength, skating) are difficult to 'teach'. Good for him getting another couple of years. If nothing else, he's a good organizational depth guy

I remember Vince or someone wrote that the organization didn't really view him as a prospect anymore at that point (last season). I didn't believe that given how they used him in Hartford, and then the fact they actually gave him a look those final couple games. Which he looked decent in, for what that's worth.

His game stagnated in Hartford but he still has tools. I think they're looking to avoid a Ryan Graves situation where they give up on a guy that stalled out in Hartford and he becomes a player. I think they're also hoping he maybe is one of those McDonagh guys who is better in the NHL than the AHL (I know he's not McDonagh, I'm just talking on principle).

Anyway this is fine. He wasn't good in Hartford last season but hopefully this deal gives him a bump in confidence and he can take a step forward. 24 is still not old for a defenseman.

Has Drury become a believer? Big and tall lanky D who can skate and take away time and space are winning Stanley Cup formula. Robertson can do those things. Too bad it took until the last few games of the regular season for Robertson to get an opportunity.
i

Here's a big tall lanky D. His physical attributes don't really show because he has shit for brains.

I think the reason the Rangers resigned him is that the team plans to go with Mackey, Dorington and Robertson as the left defensemen in Hartford. I don't consider him a serious candidate for the Rangers. He just consistently makes bad defensive reads and his offense is just average even at an AHL level. The size and skating are good but his other qualities bring him down.

When I see mock drafts showing the Rangers might take Jackson Smith whose flaw seems to be questionable hockey sense I can't help seeing another Matthew Robertson.

I have a question. 🤚

This is like the fifth time you've described your ideal defenseman as "big and tall and lanky."

You cannot be both big and tall and tall and lanky.

What do you think lanky means?
