Player Discussion Matthew Poitras II

I don't get the negativity on this kid. He will put on some weight, get better defensively and wins puck battles already against bigger players. Only negative I can see is he isn't as vanilla and non physical as some want.

At worst move him to wing with Marchand and Geekie.

The long, long list of problems this team has Matt Poitras is not one of them

I'm biased, but quite agree.

If Merk stays on the heater then Harry goes back to Juniors.

Mathew Poitras is not going back to Junior.

He’s doing fine, yeah points aren’t there but he is playing a solid game. Both sides of the puck.

You want bad Lysell last year was way more alarming

I don't think they are allowed to do that by rule.

I do agree though that he's nowhere near as bad as Lysell was.

Thy can send him back. But he has used a year off his entry level contract at this point.

I don't expect they will send him back at this point. People talk about his size, but I look at Krejci who I thought was going to get killed when he had his 6 game trial in 2007. I'd never seen a player more physically overmatched than he was then. It took him a couple years to get there, but he completely built his body

They can send him back, but once he goes back the rules are so restrictive about bringing him back to the NHL you might as well say it’s a one way ticket. While they have already burned the ELC, they can push back arbitration another year if they send him back soon.

They won’t send him back.

Sure he can. He's nineteen.

With proper nutrition and training -- especially this summer -- Matt will do what's necessary to take the next steps in his development.

He not only has "elite hockey IQ," he's got common sense, self-confidence, and the drive to be an impact player.

He's the package, ladies and germs.
I agree completely. I stood next to a very young Pasta at Logan as he was departing for the World Juniors. I guarantee you I could have picked him up and tossed him over the counter. Talk about a slight framed kid.

Years later I’m certain I could not tip him over same counter and his talent seems…. well…… it seems to have done ok!

Not saying Poitras is same, but every kid in the NHL who comes in early has to put on weight. Usually the ones with talent and vision retain their talent and vision and just earn more room.

Glad to see people are finally being realistic about the expectations of him. I was the first to suggest he should go to the tournament, but I wasn't expecting this type of performance.

I am not sure this has helped his career any and it certainly decreased any value.

Although we are having a great year - I hope management realizes they need to get max return from a goalie along with getting assets for MG, JVR and if they aren't going to resign JB then we need to get something in return.

Poitras is a big part of our future, but if we don't start preparing to surround him with talent, it will be too late.

His size is an issue and I see him getting hit and worry for him a little but the league is softer overall and there's other young small guys on other teams. Bedard obviously. Benson on Buffalo is small and I think only 18. Bruins just need to be team tough and react so that teams won't target him as much. We need to add a Lucic replacement imo instead of thinking about sending little guy(s) back.

I think he stays too, but I also see him sitting out about half the games or having limited ice time.

Kiddo isn't even 20 years old yet and already receiving the Krejci treatment.

Exactly.

I have a high opinion of the hockey knowledge on the Bruins boards. However if there is more than handful here that didn’t know (not think) a 19 year old fresh out of Juniors playing top two line Center in the NHL would not have a bump or two in the road I’m going to have to rethink that opinion.

Come on people. Get real.

2 real bad hits into the boards and right back out on the PP on the next shift. Kid is a warrior. He's been arguably Canada's best player today, very involved.
He's playing much better this game. New line seems to work better for him too. Him and Savoie were too different in style I think and it didn't click.
He has to learn to not do that turn along the boards though. He keeps doing that he will get demolished in the NHL and maybe hurt bad. You can do that in open ice, like Marchand does, but along the edge it's really dangerous. Simplify and STP.

He's playing well today. Canada as a whole, not so much.

Wonder how this will affect his confidence. Disappointing performance from Poitras. Let’s hope he shakes off that stench quickly.

Agree with this.

I think as a whole most fans were expecting more from him seeing as he's already had an impact at the NHL level. Excuses will be made for his performance at WJC but it was disappointing.

Just skimmed through the WJC GDT and a lot of fans that don't have a bruins bias seemed to think he was also underwhelming.

Poitras was definitely disappointing in my eyes. He genuinely looked like a much better player in Boston than he did in Sweden. I’m not sure he ever found his legs/his body adjusted to the time change. That’s no excuse but it was clear to me he wasn’t even capable of being a difference maker like he was doing for our Bs. Too bad, he did have a decent 3rd period today - good backchecks and gave his line a couple great looks in the 3rd. I’m hopeful he gets back to Boston and let’s go of that disappointing end to the tournament.

He will learn more from a disappointing tournament, to be honest.

I thought he was a bit underwhelming as well, but showed some flashes of dominance.
