TSN: Matthew Knies isn’t really interested in entertaining an offer sheet this summer. That’s not something he or his agent are pursuing

Don't get the concept of a player openly saying they wont entertain any other offers. Especially a young one.

Even if you want to stay, you still give yourself some negotiating leverage.

I don't believe Knies or his agent have said anything about not entertaining an offer sheet.

Chris Johnston has made a career out of telling the massive Leafs market what they want to hear.

Laughable to suggest Knies just loves playing in Toronto so much that he wouldn't sign a 9.3M offer sheet and would willingly accept a much lower offer from them.

He said Knies is not interest in entertaining one or pursuing one. Not wouldn't entertain one.

The reasonable interpretation is that his preference is to play and negotiate a new contract with Toronto. That doesn't mean that if Toronto low-balls him that he wouldn't look at offers from other teams.

The leafs need to sign him first, or he will get offer sheets, whether he wants them or not,
Then his agent will have some numbers for the leafs, saying they need to up their offer.

I think he probably does want to stay and given his performance in the playoffs Toronto will likely push hard to keep him. Treliving is notoriously stingy with his RFAs though

Could see a scenario play out where Marner leaves and the team makes sweeping changes where he signs one with the expectation that the Leafs will match because they’ll essentially have to though

Ah there it is!
There what is? I make no insinuations as to what he does or does not want--just pointing out it's very silly to take an answer like that as some sort of proof of their intentions.
Why would he say that if he didn't mean it? Because it's what the market fans want to hear. Why do they care what the fans want to hear? Because those fans (or the media scrutiny caused by said fans) is irritating AF and pandering is the path of least hassle.

Hate to break it to Leafs fans, but…

If he wasn’t interested, he would say he’s not interested.

The fact that he said he “isn’t really interested” means that he is, in fact, somewhat interested.

There has been some noise about this, it is sounding like the Leafs and Knies are close enough to a deal they think it gets done. Any guesses?

I would push back on him wanting to be in Toronto. Seems like there are much better places to be if offer sheet’d at a higher salary.

This makes no sense. Why not just do what Marner did today? Like we literally have a player who all season has made it clear he is gone. Just grasping at straws by haters.

Bad move. He just told the entire league he doesn't care about winning.

Knies told the league he wants to win with his play.

If Knies has intentions to leverage an offsheet, he’s not going to announce it. Obviously he is going to say “i want to olay here…”. Its meaningless

Pure hopium by Leaf haters is all this thinking is. People saw how good Knies is and how much of a warrior he is and want the Leafs to fumble it. Not going to happen with the Leafs front office so horny for size and physicality they are going to make him a top priority.

That has nothing to do with it. I couldn’t care less if Knies signed an offersheet or not.

You have to be realistic. If the GM plays hardball, Knies could leverage an offersheet.

Leafs should lock him up asap and prioritize him over all other players.

If Treliving doesn’t go 9+ on the AAV Knies will get offer sheets July 1 for exactly the reasons you describe about how he plays.

7.5 is not hardball by any means

I consider it a lowball. He should be compared to Slafkovsky as a comparable. Knies had a better season and playoffs. He is signing a new contract when the cap is higher than when Slaf signed.

8M is fair. He could get higher and likely deserves it.

Slaf is a 1st OA pick Knies is a 2nd round pick that is one big difference. Knies also older

I'm a Habs fan and I agree with you. If he gets to July 1st unsigned, and I'm KH, I put in a 9.5- offer on the table. Even if that's more than what Suzuki is getting paid.

Leafs could match I guess, if they let Tavares walk (which they probably should) and if Marner takes off as well, then they would have the money. But then again, if they have the money, it shouldn't get to July 1st anyways.

Knies is exactly the type of player I want on my team. Habs have the picks they can give for this.
