TSN: Matthew Knies isn’t really interested in entertaining an offer sheet this summer. That’s not something he or his agent are pursuing

He’s made like 100 million dollars I don’t think an extra 1.5 million a year is important to him at this point of his career.
Just because he made 100 million dollars over many years playing, doesnt mean 1.5 million is nothing important. To most players, 1.5 million is a lot of money. They would still go for a fair market value rather than taking a pay cut.

For most players sure. For most former star players nearing the end of their career, I highly doubt it. If I’m in his 100 million dollar shoes I want a cup and my hometown team has one of the best chances to get me one, im taking that opportunity.

Well, players like Stamkos still chased money even after winning 3 cups and being on one team for more than a decade since their draft. It means not everyone is the same or just stay because of loyalty. Some players still want to get paid.

Now why on Earth would Knies want to do that or go to Vancouver right now…. He’s clearly a Hab :sarcasm:
Am talking about Tavares. Lets say they couldnt find a younger center or deal for one, they could look for a stop gap and just give Tavares more than what Leafs would give. Leafs might give him 6 million max for 3 years or sign with Canucks and make 8 million for 4 years. Thats 14 million dollars extra of guaranteed money for the next 4 years.

You realize that is a terrible example right? Stamkos wanted to stay in Tampa lol
If he wanted to stay, he would have stayed buddy. He went to Nashville to get paid more. Tampa would accept Stamkos re-signing, dont tell me they didnt even want him even if he was making league minimum.

You’d get 1 1st, 1 2nd, and 1 3rd for compensation. The team can also give up any 3 of those assets theyd like too. So if you have a 27th oa and a 9th oa 1st, they can send you 27th oa
That is incorrect. 8.5 x 7 years would be averaged out over 5 years...so 11.9 million/5. Currently that sits in the 4 firsts category. Also teams absolutely can not choose what picks they send. It is their own picks that go. Cut and dry, no discussion on that.

Leafs better lock this guy up with a big money deal before he gets to Restricted Free Agency July 1. He’s going to get more than one big offer sheet as an RFA.

As a Sens fan, he’s one of the few likeable players on the team.

Offersheets are so rare, and the fact that the team has a ton of flexibility in deciding how they want to shape the team, that Toronto would match any offer.

That being said, with the cap going up I think he could end up with something like Brady’s contract.

I think a bridge would a mistake at this point.

Should the Leafs Bridge or go Long-term with Knies?

Advantages to bridge - cheaper deal for next couple of years, making it more likely to use cap savings to win in short term

Advantages to long-term extension - locked in at a rate that could save money down the road on a future contract if he continues to improve

Ideally long term I would think but bridge wouldn't be the end of the world either though

Tavares can also make that money back in retirement, via a front office job with the Leafs. Doesn't even have to be something serious, can be a senior advisor or whatever.

What do you think Tavares signs for 6.5 ?

Why not? Hes living out his dream playing for his childhood team. He has made a ton of bank in his career and may not want to uproot his family when he has a support system in place in Toronto. He also realizes that taking less money will allow the team to keep guys like Marner/Knies and add reinforcements.

Chasing money after winning cups makes sense. Chasing money before winning one doesn’t when you have as much as JT.

Don't get the concept of a player openly saying they wont entertain any other offers. Especially a young one.

Even if you want to stay, you still give yourself some negotiating leverage.

Winning two cups is exactly why he chased money. He already accomplished the ultimate goal so it made sense for him to cash in while he still can. Hence why he took pay cut on his last contract with Tampa; they hadn't won yet and he wanted to give the team room to add and retain good players. Worked out really well for him.

8.5/year was a steal when you consider that Toews & Kane and inked extensions worth $10.5/year the previous year.
