TSN: Matthew Knies isn’t really interested in entertaining an offer sheet this summer. That’s not something he or his agent are pursuing

What do you think Tavares signs for 6.5 ?
Even less . Think 5 ish . However with the bump in cap maybe you’re closer . That’s always been the number I had in my mind . If he wants to stay he’s gonna get squeezed a bit . Of course he could make more elsewhere but I don’t see it ..guy has made a fortune already . Think being home on a team that he’s comfortable with / that is competitive each year is what he’d be striving for

The way I see it is Knies is not the top priority but he will likely be the easiest to re-sign. Marner will be top priority but he's going to wait it out the entire summer. Tavares should be taking anything the Leafs offer to him unless he wants to risk playing for another team like Stamkos and not resulting in a cup like Nashville.

I think Marner is the most important...but Knies is the first priority to actually get signed. Sign Knies before July 1. Then figure out what is happening with Marner and once both of those are done you can figure out what you have to do with JT.

In my opinion they should really only be singing Tavares AFTER Knies and Marner. If there is room, see what he will take to remain on the team.

Knies likely looking for at least $9M per. He is playing with some of the better players in the league, but just like his linemates took no discounts, he shouldn't be taking any either.
I swear the Leafs should do it.

Chris Johnston is a sniveling little weasel and Leafs homer who will happily spew propaganda to people in Toronto if it gets him clicks.

If someone puts a 9.1M offer sheet in front of Knies and his agent he will almost certainly sign it, unless the Leafs are already offering 8M+.

If Knies signs 1 year at 5.5 with a promised 8 year deal.

12.5 + 5.5 + 6.5

Trade Jankrok.

Sign 4 forwards at 1 million.

Its doable to keep all 3.
More and more I think about it though I see one of them going.

Even if he signs an offer sheet at 9 million. Leafs have some easy decisions. 1. Trade Jarnkrok, that’s 3-4 million right there. You squeeze Tavares, let’s say he signs for 6 million that’s a difference of 5 million from his current deal. Add in the cap going up and Yeah everybody can fit in

The Leafs can easily make it impossible for another team to make an offer sheet simply by electing arbitration if Knies is not resigned by July 1.

According to the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), once a team elects salary arbitration for a restricted free agent (RFA), that player becomes ineligible to sign an offer sheet with another team. This restriction is outlined in Article 10.2(a)(i)(B) of the CBA:

"Notwithstanding the foregoing, if a Group 2 Player requests salary arbitration, or a Club requests salary arbitration, pursuant to Article 12, such Player will not be eligible to negotiate with any Club other than his Prior Club or sign an Offer Sheet pursuant to this Article 10, except as provided in Sections 12.3(a) and 12.10."

This means that once arbitration is elected—by either the player or the team—the player is restricted from negotiating offer sheets with other teams. The exceptions mentioned in Sections 12.3(a) and 12.10 pertain to specific circumstances, such as the timing of arbitration filings and certain procedural nuances.

It's important to note that while a player who files for arbitration can still sign an offer sheet before the arbitration hearing, once the arbitration process is initiated by the team, the player's ability to sign an offer sheet is effectively removed.

If Knies gets 9M, I don't see a reason why Marner would take anything less than 13M. That's 22M. They got like 6 players to sign that's including Tavares with 4.68M.

They have Kampf sitting in the press box with 2.5 and Jarnkrok making 2m on 4th line. Lots of fat to trim IF it came to that. Can likely afford it even without moving them

The Leafs can afford Marner at 12 and Knies at 8.5 and bring back virtually the same roster. The problem arises for the Leafs if Marner wants above 13 and Knies wants above 9.

I'm genuinely curious how removing a guy making 2.1 mill a year (who then has to be replaced with another player) saves 4 million dollars

The math on that is 3 mill to fill 3 roster spots, one of which being a point per game C.

If Tavares does you that kind of massive favour you should be eternally grateful to him.

This is a PPG center and you're talking Alex Wennberg money

For sure, offer a high enough AVV and a team can't or won't match.

But no team is going to make that type of offer sheet.

The good teams likely don't have the cap space to do it.

The bad teams aren't going to do because they aren't going to give away a 2026 1st not with Gavin Meckenna sitting there.

No chance.

It gives you one more depth piece. Depth wins championships. The depth is the reason the leafs are doing well right now
Effective, cost controlled depth wins championships.

You don't let a superstar walk so you can go overpay a bunch of 4th liners and complimentary pieces.
