TSN: Matthew Knies isn’t really interested in entertaining an offer sheet this summer. That’s not something he or his agent are pursuing

Knies likely looking for at least $9M per. He is playing with some of the better players in the league, but just like his linemates took no discounts, he shouldn't be taking any either.
I doubt he gets that much when Johnston only got $8.4m

He signed and burned an elc year coming out of college. I thought the guys who do that are like a 10.2 or something rfa. Thus no OS eligibility when ELC expires. Is that not the case for him?
No, he played 10 games his first season (3 regular season, 7 playoff), so he hit the bare minimum number of games to qualify for a year of professional experience his first year.

The guy plays with Matthews who has been broken as a goal scorer all season but is getting more assists than he's ever had and of course Marner. The Leafs replaced Hands with Bunting for $1M and they can replace Knives for cheap too. If he gets an offer sheet over $6M take the picks.
now that's idiotic

i'm eternally grateful you are kept far away from running this already messed up team

Agreed, would love to see a low quality team like Montreal, Vancouver etc. offer sheet him and give up a 1st round pick +

Good chance those teams regress next season so owning their 1st would be great for toronto

100% Marner always making it clear every contract that he wants to be overpaid, why would anyone else on the team want to do otherwise? I sure as hell wouldn't. Who wants to take less so someone else can be overpaid?

This is just Marner though... Matthews signs without a fuss and if he wanted he could get maximum. If Marner was as talented as Matthews, he'd demand maximum.

Contract stuff is all about PR. This quote is just a smart thing to say. He's committed to being a Leaf. If an offer sheet happens it means it was the Leaf's fault.

But seriously, the Leafs aren't dumb. It won't come to an offer sheet.

you'd really have to worry about him and his agent if they didn't want offer sheets--seems like a great way to get more money.

you have to worry about a player that doesn't want to leave? huh? you guys realize that signing an offer sheet means you are prepared to join another team right?

occam's razor, instead of this being some 4D chess media play by a young player, he's probably just very happy with a good team that plays him with good players and doesn't want to entertain the thought of leaving Toronto.

Definite 3 year bridge

Bring back marner

And extend Knies after year 2 of the bridge like Tampa has done with their guys and you avoid another offer sheet

Gives you nice reprieve on the cap for 3 years

entertaining an offersheet doesn't mean signing an offer sheet. it means you are open to receiving them, and will consider them. you then have leverage with which to raise your asking price.
you worry about him because he and his agent would be the dumbest f***ers in the business if they didn't try to gain every dollar they could in the situation they want to be in. even if he had no intention of leaving, you can show TOR that someone wants to give him $9m/yr and so ask for $8.5 instead of the $7.5 TOR leads with.
seriously god bless your naive little soul if you think someone is going to just pass on $2m/year for 8 years because they like TOR.

Nah. Dubas parting gift on his way out to not make him 10.2(c) eligible.

This place is insane, there's no way in hell an offer sheet is going to work

Knies is a 30 goal, 60-70 point 22 year old power forward, the Leafs have cap space and can match anything coming in so I ask you how much are you going to have to offer him before the Leafs balk?

Probably 4 1sts, to pay him 11M

Still keen?

very unlikely to happen for sure but hypothetically a team could play chicken just to get TOR to pay more and shrink their cap space. that sort of thing wouldn't win you any friends in the GM pool I imagine.

If Knies can get 8 on a long term deal he and his agent would be stupid to take a bridge. He’s shooting 20%.

I doubt somebody would even do that

Offer sheets work when the player hasn't broken out yet and nobody is certain what the player is

Holloway, Broberg and the center from the Hurricanes (forget his name), that's the type of player we should be focusing on
